Video & Podcast Test: How To Write Suckitudinous Fiction

I chose one of my funnier articles on writing fiction and turned it into both a video and a podcast. I’m testing new software that I hope to use for a number of different applications, including workshops, and I’d like to know how these two formats work for you.

Chrome: 45.0.2454.99 m lots open tabs

Flash video worked fine off the page
Audio worked fine off the page
YouTube worked fine off the page

    Firefox 40.0.3
    Flashblock Disabled
    Adblock plus enabled
(daren’t write down number of open windows and tabs)
Result – Had to tell it to “activate” flash several times, but eventually it worked having added HollyLisle.com to my whitelist
First time through I lost patience, downloaded it using the link below the video and played it in VLC Media Player, where the download worked fine without any coaxing needed.
Audio – worked fine off the page. Download OK too.
YouTube – worked fine off your page

Firefox 41.0 (and I broke my own “never download the .0 version of anything – let someone else break their computer” rule for you!)

All results as above with FF 40.0.3

Oh, this read out loud is just so funny to me. I laughed when I read it, and it was riotous to listen to. Consider dressing the part of a stuffy Ivy League professor and reading this like a lecture on YouTube? Pleeeeeese?

I don’t know if you changed anything since first uploading this, but I have no problems. I’m on Mac, Chrome v. 45.0.2454.85 (64-bit).

True, it doesn’t flexibly resize, but I don’t expect that in most kinds of video. It does have the full screen option which works as expected.

Audio is fine, as heard here. No video for me on Chrome and haven’t yet checked YouTube. On download, both audio and video come through without any problems.

I rid myself of Flash player weeks ago and can still see it after download.

And there you have it from my end. Love this piece, BTW.

      Thanks, Michelle.

Firefox is what I use. And why I was so excited about this software. The site and demos worked beautifully for me, and were attractive and well-presented.

The only way I find out things don’t work is by trying the browsers other folks use.

Guess I should have done that before I bought them.

    In SeaMonkey v2.5:

Video version seems fine both here and on YouTube (saw earlier via my subs notices). Player on this page works (well, once I enabled javascript, adding only hollylisle.com to my existing permissions).

But I don’t see an audio link here at all, with or without javascript. Might be because it’s a flash audio player.

Having a Download link for the video is a Good Thing, not only for saving for future viewing, but also for crap connections that can’t handle streaming.

OTOH, there’s no way for the user to set bandwidth, which can make it unwatchable if it doesn’t downsample intelligently (as these players often don’t). Likewise, my screen size options are limited to either tiny or fullscreen. [This is why when there’s an option to “watch this video on YouTube”, I usually do that, cuz it’s more user-configurable.]

In Chrome v35.0 (which is a little newer, works perfectly with the current abomination of Google Maps, and enables everything by default), I don’t see either audio or video. No links, no player.

    ======

PaleMoon v12.1 (JS allowed for everywhere): identical to SeaMonkey.

Argh. Chrome… Flash… AND no flexible resizing.

      Lovely.

This is definitely not great news.

      Thanks, Rez.
