The Kid Graduated Basic

Yesterday, my older son finished the last of Air Force basic training and graduated. He has base liberty and a couple of days of town pass before he and several of the guys he graduated with go on to their tech school, the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, at Presidio of Monterey, where they’ll be taking tests like this. He’s excited, intimidated, and determined.

And I’m very proud of him.

At absolute quickest, he’ll finish training in 70 weeks from the week he starts — they’re just in pre-language right now. Washbacks, changes to a different language, or illness could all increase the time.

    But he’s excited.

The best of luck to your son. His career choice is both ambitious and admirable. The DLIFLC crams more foreign language study than most of the best undergraduate major programs in this country — and then some — into roughly a year, so it’s definitely a huge challenge, but well worth the experience. Of course, then comes more training, so he’s going to be one busily studying young man for a good while.

Congratulations! My best friend went through DLI. I hope he has fun.

Won’t be posting any pictures of the kid. First, I didn’t get to attend his graduation — we couldn’t swing the finances for the trip.

But second, it’s possible that he’ll be going into a classified line of work, and I think it would be smarter if I didn’t. I don’t know where he’ll be or who he’ll be dealing with, and in this situation, maternal pride has to take a back seat to watching out for my kid.
