TALYN Rights Reversion Party 10 AM–3 PM Friday (Eastern Time)

Party on Friday
Party on Friday

I’m throwing a party in honor of my agent, Robin Rue, her assistant, Beth Miller, and the very fine folks at WRITERS HOUSE, my agency. The party will be this Friday between 10 AM and 3 PM (my Friday work hours), and will be here, so everyone can attend, and also simultaneously on Twitter.

You don’t have to do anything special to participate on the weblog, but if you want the live feed, you’ll need to create a Twitter account, and then follow me.

Twitter is here:

http://twitter.com

My Twitter name is:

@hollylisle

I’m taking the day to just hang out online and talk to people, eat virtual chocolate, drink virtual champagne, and litter the place with virtual confetti.

Why?

Because for more than six months, I’ve been requesting rights reversion on TALYN, which has been out of print for quite a while.

And AFTER more than six months had passed, I received notice that Tor would not be reverting the rights; that they had decided to print ebook versions of both TALYN
and HAWKSPAR.

At which point, Robin and Beth got all the necessary paperwork together, and informed Tor that it had passe its six month grace period, and that their position was
the rights belonged to me.

There was a long, painful silence between last week and this week.

And then today, I received the rights reversion from Robin and Beth.

TALYN, which I consider the single best book I’ve written to date, once again belongs solely to me.

I’ll send you a reminder either late Thursday or early Friday. And a link to the party page.

I hope you’ll join me. We’ll have fun.

Cheerfully,
Holly

So glad we were able to help with TALYN!

Where’s my chocolate and champagne? 🙂

This is Beth, my agent-assistant. 😀

Thank you so much, and the Godiva truck just backed up with another delivery.

Congratulations! I enjoyed Talyn & Hawkspar very much, and I’m looking forward to being able to access more of your books as you bring them out. (Is it silly that your announcement that you would be making your out-of-print work available is the biggest reason I am now the owner of an e-reader?)

I’ve profited greatly from HTTS, and am watching your move to self-publishing (and the associated classes) with great interest. I’m not ready to quit my day job (and perhaps never will be – the people, situations and constant intellectual stimulation feed my muse like nothing else seems to, and I’m reluctant to mess with what works), but I’m working towards publishable work as my current health allows. (Chronic pain sucks. But it’s great for creating genuine, believable descriptions of pain in my writing.) Your example as you work through your own health issues has been inspiring to me.

I can’t stay long, but I wanted to pop by to share the celebration of your rights reversion, and to share the general joy in creation.

Greetings from snowy Colorado where it’s never too early to raise a glass to a writing warrior! Congratulations on taking back your property. I read Talyn a while back, and she’s my hero!
And, thanks for HTRYN. It’s a life saver.

    Way to go Holly!
Big congratulations on recovering your reversion rights.
It must feel like regaining loved pets that someone kept locked away so that they couldn’t return to you.
Now, TALYN and HAWKSPAR are back home to stay!

I WISH. Talyn is home to stay. Odds are I’ll NEVER get HAWKSPAR back.

        No, there’s always hope.
One down, and one to go!

        Holly Rocks!

Holly, party time indeed! Congratulations from me, too. It’s a fantastic outcome for you, and motivation/inspiration for other authors to be staunch about their rights as well. Can’t wait to see Redbird on the ‘shelves’. 🙂

As a beginner in the fiction world, this is the kind of situation that I find interesting and deeply concerning. I mean, nobody cares about the reprint rights to the editorials or a software review articles I wrote. Or the manuals either. But I am having trouble understanding why the rights didn’t automatically revert to you. Why did you have to ask for them? Is this kind of thing usual in the publishing business? All I have ever seen so far is short story contracts, and they all contain a time limit clause. After the time limit is up, the rights revert to the author automatically.

Or, once again, I could be confused.

YAY! I hope, given I’m Australia, that the time difference works out that I can join in the fun!

Congratulations on getting your rights back – I’ve been wanting to read Talyn for awhile, but haven’t had luck getting a copy.

    Woohoo! Congratulations!!!

So, when can I expect to buy the ebook? Are you planning revisions? And oooh! Does this mean you might still write Redbird some day?

    Congratulations again! 😀

Yup. That’s what it means. 😀

On republishing…it’s next in my fiction queue after the four suspense novels. Which are next in the queue. 😀

I’m looking forward to those too! 😀

Congratulations. Given today’s publishing world, those e-rights are worth throwing a party for.

Holly, I totally empathize. When I asked for my rights back to my fluffy romance novel, A Man for Sylvia, printed back in 1985, Harlequin asked to keep the rights because they said it was one of their back lists they wanted to e-book. BUT–they reserved the right to set the price at whatever they wanted to and I would only get a few cents per book. I said no and again requested my rights. Fortunately they complied without any more problems (several months later).

Congrats on getting your rights back, too. I’ll probably never get the rights back on HAWKSPAR (and never see penny in royalties, either). But I have TALYN, which means reprinting it can pay me to write REDBIRD.

That is simply amazing to me–never seeing royalties from something you’ve written. That’s why I’m glad I’m not considering the traditional publishing route. Your explanation of how a writer is treated while going down that path is scary, and I’ve read it from other authors too. Congrats on getting your rights back, you lucky girl, you! PS: I used your naughty wind chimes (from one of your previous postings) in my first novel I’m writing. Of course, I designed my own style, but still naughty just the same! Happy Partying!
