Socks That Don’t Fit

Serenity Prosperity Health socksI bought some good sock yarn. Lovely hand-painted 100% merino wool spun so fine I had to knit it up with US 0 size needles. I’d thought to make myself a really spiffy pair of socks, and sock construction being what it is, you try socks on as you’re making them and adjust the fit as necessary, and when you’re done, they fit you perfectly, so I was not foreseeing anything untoward happening.

I did them as quantum socks, though not in Anzi patterns, because I figured I needed some socks to wear outside the house, and the Anzi socks are pretty…um…cultural looking. Meaning that Matt laughs at them. I did the Anzi meditations, though, and I knitted Serenity, Prosperity, and Health into them.

And when I finished the first one–quite an undertaking in itself, because these things go eighty stitches round, and a couple hundred stitches down, so that we’re talking about roughly 16000 stitches per sock (or about 32000 the pair), it didn’t fit.

Remember what I said about socks you make for yourself always fitting, because you constantly try them on? I tried the sock on. It fit until I finished it, and then it was too big.

The only conclusion I could come to was that I wasn’t making that pair of socks for me.

So I knit the second one, and in the meantime discovered the person whom the socks would fit, and who happened to be in need of some Serenity, Prosperity, and Health. So they’re going out in the mail to her tomorrow. Meantime, though, they really are some spiffy socks. My design, the first things I’ve ever made on size 0 needles (think “toothpicks” for those of you who are reading this but don’t knit). And I wanted to post the picture I took of them, and brag just a bit.

    Definite awesomeness and win.

I get cranky when I knit socks on anything smaller than a size 4 needle. ;-p

Exiled…Yeah. People will watch me knitting and say, “I just don’t have the patience for that,” and I think, If you could have seen me pacing and fidgeting and stalking around (or in line just being way too much there) you would understand the only patience I HAVE is this ball of string and these two sticks. (Or five sticks, or one really LONG circular needled) where socks are concerned):D

“While I’m knitting, all of that goes away, and I can stand patiently in lines, wait for people who are late and slow, and endure endless boredom without losing my temper or pacing in circles driving everyone else nuts.

I totally know what you mean. I really don’t care if it takes the doctor an hour to get to me if I have my knitting there.

But without them, gee you’d think someone let Oscar the Grouch’s sister out.

Beautiful socks. Your discovery they really were for someone else gives me hope.
I tried to crochet some leg warmers this past winter and wound up with something an elepahnt would be proud to wear (some exaggeration here.) I’m still not sure what went wrong as I did try them on several times and they were fitting properly.
Perhaps they belong to someone else and I’ll find that person or they’ll find me at the right time.

Inkblot–I had to laugh. I knit because I don’t have patience. I am world’s worst pain-in-the-ass type-A personality. While I’m knitting, all of that goes away, and I can stand patiently in lines, wait for people who are late and slow, and endure endless boredom without losing my temper or pacing in circles driving everyone else nuts.

Socks are characters, and they do tell you where they want to go and what they want to do. In my case, I have decided to go along with the flow – I get to buy and fondle the yarns, enjoy the flow of yarn through my fingers. The socks decide what size they want to be and whose feet to grace.
Unless, of course, you joined Sockapalooza.

I am going to be starting my first size 0 socks as soon as I finish the three baby blankets I have started.

The most wonderful thing about knittig is that someone will love even your mistakes. 😉

That’s awesome. I hope that they bring lots of Serenity, Prosperity and Health to the recipient!

And I feel your pain on the toothpicks. The smallest I’ve ever knit with are size 1, and those are quite small enough.
