Saturday NOT In the Park (WABWM)

The Brain Mass Issue

The news on my brother-in-law, by the way, is there is no news. He’s in a holding pattern now, where the hospital with the doctor who WANTS to do his surgery suggested he go to a bigger medical center, and the bigger medical center said he’s not a county resident and he’s self pay, so no chance.

At this point, he’s controlling the seizures pretty well. In theory, he may be able to get the surgery in January.

My Writing

Last week went OVER seventy hours working on Hot To Revise Your Novel, including working all morning today.

Next week, I think, will be more sane. A lot of what I’ve been doing is one-time stuff associated with setting up the How To Revise Your Novel course software, the course forums, adding a NaNoWriMo forum to HTTS, testing things, creating workgroups….

A lot, of course, is writing the course and interacting with my two beta students, so even once everything is set up, I’m still going to be logging some serious hours. And once the Early Birds hit How To Revise Your Novel at the end of November or the first part of December, that’s going to require some additional time, too.

But, to get to the point, I wiped out around 3 AM last night without ever getting to my fiction.

I’m not going to write tonight. Today is my Official Weekend, DammitTM. 🙂

But I’ll be back tomorrow night. With fiction.

How did you do yesterday? How are you doing today?

Glad to hear things are a little more stable for your b i law. I hope the New Year turns for the better for him.

I wonder if the surgeon who wants to do the surgery could get permission to do it somewhere else? And I really like your idea about going to a teaching hospital, too.

Holly, I really hope he gets taken care of as soon as possible. I’m so sorry your family is going through this.

I got distracted with a new idea, so my word count this weekend goes toward that: 984 Friday and 1937 Saturday.

I didn’t really get any words last night, well…not in the book anyway, because I got plenty of words in the new dictionary I’m making. I had a lot of fun with the vampyre’s language last night, and I also discovered what they call themselves. The Shagrassi, or Shadow People, have a language that sounds very much like the growling, snarling, and hissing of a cat, and it’s a lot of fun associating meanings to random sounds. 🙂

Ryan’s master also got a name change in light of the new dictionary (which has less than one hundred words right now, but it’ll build as I go along). Good luck everyone on your writing, and I am praying for your family Holly. 🙂

I spent Saturday working online with a good friend and sometime collaborator (hi, June!) to get the collab we did back in Late Spring/Early Summer polished. Line edits and revision of three scenes, and the story is complete and finished at 65,000 words.

Today (Sunday), it should be back to the main MIP, assuming life doesn’t interfere.

It’s getting harder to count the words per day, because I’m scooping up of a couple hundred whenever I can fit them in and one day’s word count overlaps into the next.
Some free writing (don’t know how or if to count those for NaNoWriMo though) and a good playlist really got my words flowing last night so I’m up to 17,768 words total. I’m hoping for another good writing day today.

And I worry when you’re not here on the blog! It’s good to see you back and I hope things start to look up for your brother law 🙂

    708 words, Thursday.
    384 words, Friday.
    834 words, Saturday.

The Bodyguard and two of his compatriots fought a trio of assassins. And won. The two bodyguards hiding with the Princess in the examination room came out to join them, and they guy jacked from behind. The Bodyguard and one other bodyguard were able to get the Princess out unscathed. They stole an aircar from the assassins and split.

The three of them went to a safehouse in the city. The Bodyguard checked out the room before bringing in The Princess and the other bodyguard. The other bodyguard is trying to understand what they’re going to do next. The Princess doesn’t understand what the fuss is about and wants to go home and she doesn’t want to stay in this “cesspool.” The Bodyguard is leaving to get new identities for the three of them.

In other news, The Usurper nervously sits over the body of the King. He receives a call and opens the door for a man in coveralls with an assault rifle (The Liaison). He gets the report that everything is going as planned. A group of soldiers in disguise take the King’s body out (he’s still alive.) And The Liaison receives orders from the Usurper to release all political prisoners.

OK. So I slightly departed from my outline with how the Bodyguard and the Princess exit the hospital. I think the outline plot is actually better. I’ve added notes to fix that during revision. I am going to re-order the scenes to put the Usurper scene up before the scene with the Queen.

    Praying for you, Holly.

Sorry for not posting but I did 888 on Thursday, and 702 on Friday. Tonight did 100 word drabble: “City of Glass.”

850 words for me, and got an ending for my short story. Not THE ending, but an ending. Now I get to think about how and why this ending does not feel right and hopefully come up with an ending that does. By tomorrow. No pressure or anything, of course.

Friday: 767 of interrogation and torture that were harder for me than for the characters. It didn’t come out right, except that I think I at least salvaged the ending and I can move on from there.
No words yet today as I watching my nephew.

Holly, I’m sorry about all the frustration and delays with your BIL. I wish I could offer you something more than sympathy/empathy. At least managing the seizures is a good thing. It boggles my mind that the country who preaches rights and freedoms so loudly can’t seem to get a handle on making med-aid a right and not a priviledge.

Sadly, free, government-managed health care would (probably will) guarantee that there won’t be any surgeons qualified to do the insanely complicated surgery my brother-in-law and other folks like him need. When there’s no incentive for someone to dedicate his life and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars learning a complex skill (because wages for surgeons are fixed), there won’t be anyone who WILL learn those skills.

The only rights the government has any business guaranteeing are the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (not the acquisition, just the pursuit.) Attempting to guarantee other rights has the effect of taking away those three.

4,488 words today, to bring me up to target.

Everyone who’s anyone is at the Midwinter Ball, hosted by the palace, and Princess Laena has just met Baron Rennor Zhaer, about whom many rumours are flying. Most speculating about his parentage, or about how a man with a clearly foreign came to hold a Ralnan estate.

Hubby took the kids and I got five solid hours in. I feel like I should have more to show for it. I did get a whole scene in though. The next one is going to take a little more planning first. I’m not sure what all I want to have happen. It’s something I’ve been building up to and had put off making some decisions, but it’s time to think about some specifics now.

I’m a little scared leaving off here, though. Historically I have a much easier time starting writing the next day if I leave off in the middle of a scene and can’t wait to finish it. It’s the Scheherazade effect.

1200 today – for the first time in 5 years thinking I may not get done with the planned Nano book in Nov…. and feeling pretty ok about it. 500-1000 words a day, five days a week. Thanks for making me think about doing this a new way!

  16. Emily Avatar

1300 words for NaNo. I wanted to take weekends off, but I fell behind. Now I’m 600 words ahead! 🙂
