Saturday In The Park. With George.

Another title. This one from a pointillist painting I always loved for its general weirdness.

And I’m doing the Saturday day-off thing.

Since you’re not, how did the words go?

No writing last night, just did some research which led me down the garden path. It was very unsatisfying. I did, however, manage to get some reading done, something I haven’t done in about a week. John Wyndham. Good stuff.

      Which John Wyndham book?

Chocky. I’m really enjoying it, but as usual, my final opinion rests heavily on the ending.

2,084 words. Which was more than I thought that I had gotten down. I spent most of the evening sitting on the bed with index cards throwing out ideas. The Writer’s Block person in the dark room exercise helped.

I was going great guns and then realized that I’ve been presenting the evidence in the murder investigation all wrong. Wrong as in a higgeldy-piggeldy MESS, actually.

So today I’m figuring out what order will make more sense and then will be juggling scenes to fit the new order. New words will probably be nil, but progress isn’t always word count.

I really know where you’re coming from. I think it’s that sort of writing where constantly rewriting your draft as you write it is inevitable. You finish a paragraph, think about the next one, then scream “No! It’s all wrong!” throw out an entire page and start writing again.

But it’s so satisfying when finally get it right.

313 words for Saturday, in which Taskh finds his contact, but has to wait for the servants to wake the man up.

zero words again, this time there is a reason … not a good one, but at least a reason.

I am a story junkie. Over the years I have dipped my toes into a variety of TV shows, vowing not to get hooked because it can be time consuming, and interferes with regular life. But, now that they air re-run episodes in rapid succession, I have managed to get caught up in a few I vowed not to.

This week, I wound up getting hooked on Greys Anatomy reruns then saw the season 5 finale. I spent the better part of Saturday watching the episodes that are available online then reading up on the others.

I tried to catch up on Lost, but am still behind.

I finally o’d’d on GA, and I am ready to get back to life.

Okay, I am a story junkie … now I need to get back to my own. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I can relate. I got sucked into Battlestar Galactica (yay for Netflix!) recently. Now that it’s over, I’m determinedly staying away from TV shows. I won’t even watch movies with my husband any more while I detox. ๐Ÿ˜€

I don’t watch TV at all, and then I binge really badly. I know when Lost finishes in May I’m going to watch all 6 seasons back to back.

        1. Rabia Avatar

Binge is exactly the right word for my TV viewing habits. Nothing for months, then obsessive watching of one show. ๐Ÿ˜›

Saturday and Sunday are nearly always days off for me too. Too much family stuff going on to have a reasonable writing stretch on the weekends.

577 words that I had to force because I was exhausted, but I wanted some progresss. I am happy with the words though. My two characters are establishing a relationship.

I do have a question. I read somewhere that a first time novel is best to be around 250 pages in length. How many words would that be?

358 words down for ‘The Pirate Girl’, Grace tells the duke some mythological Irish tales of battle. Spent a fair bit of time researching before writing. Been spending so much time on ‘Dog Show Detective’ lately that it’s nice to revist Grace and her pirates.

    Hi all,

I’ve been lurking on these threads for ages but never posted. Even so I’ve found them motivating! One of the reasons I’ve never posted is that I’m always a day ahead — you know what they say: “don’t worry about the world ending tomorrow, because it’s already tomorrow in Australia”. So I never know whether I should post today’s progress or yesterday’s.

Daft, I know, so I’ve finally decided to bite the bullet and just join in. So, today’s (Sunday’s) words: 1380, which is the most I’ve written in one day for months, so I’m feeling pretty pleased. That brings my total wordcount for the novel to 88,351. The end is in sight, and not before time, since I want to finish this before I start Nano in November.

    1. Charmaine Avatar

      Hi Marina,
Also in Australia, good to see you here, well done with your word count so far.

Welcome aboard. I always post to the most recent thread, no matter what day it is. (I write first thing in the morning, not at night, so I was confused about this, too.)

Wow, 88K. Must be wonderful to have the end in sight.

It took me a bit to figure out when to post. This is what I decided. I write in the morning, Holly posts at night. So, the morning after Holly posts, I post the count I wrote yesterday.

That’s what I do as well. I write throughout the day but mainly in the evenings. I’m not done when she posts so it goes to the next day.

      Howdy!

When I was in India (for a week), I found it easiest to just total up my words for the day and then post them into the current Write A Book thread. I found that easier than holding my words and post the next day in the “right” thread.

    Hmmm. Let’s do some math
~400 words on a short story
    900+ words on the novel
    Some pre-plan for nanowrimo
That wasn’t a bad day at all ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s going to be all about the morning pages tomorrow.

    also isnt that a musical?

    1. Johanna Avatar
      Johanna

“Sunday In The Park With George” is a musical written by Stephen Sondheim. The musical is about the painter Georges-Pierre Seurat, who painted the pointillist painting Holly was referring to: “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” The musical dramatizes his life, and the first half of the musical is about him and his mistress, and it is also about being a misunderstood genius. The second half of the play is about his great-grandson, who is also an artist, but is NOT a genius, and is struggling to figure out what he’s trying to say with his work. It’s a fantastic musical, and you can rent the DVD of the performance with Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin (which is the best version, hands down) from Netflix. You can also buy it off Amazon.

Did 1862 words of planning for HoC today. I worked out, starting with the ending I want for each conflict, what steps I’ll have to take to get from beginning to end. It’s not scenes, precisely, but more like checkpoints for myself to make sure that each conflict is getting enough story time relative to its importance. Since I’m going to be putting the story out as a serial, I need to know that I won’t get nine tenths of the way through it and realize that I dropped a threat somewhere.

I fail epically at taking days off. I’m enjoying my work a little too much if I would rather plot than relax.

My wife’s best friend got married today and my wife was coordinating everything. I got volunteered to do the video. So we were there from 3 until 11. I’m dead tired. I was going to write after I got back but I’m too fried. Luckily, I wrote some before getting ready.

The Mage sacrifices a human with a magical item and then prepares to sacrifice the Mentor. The Sheriff, tied up in a chair, is horrified. He notices a mist on the ground but ignores it. The Mage propels the item toward the Mentor when the mist coalesces into the Thief and then into an owl. The owl snatches the magical item out of the air and flies off. The Mage casts a lightning bolt at the bird but the Sheriff throws himself (and the chair he’s tied to) into the back of the Mage. The Mage punishes the Sheriff and then takes after the bird, but it’s gone.

finished ch 14, reaching 63,000 words total so far. did some more surgery one my outline, cutting out the few remaining scenes that dealt more with the politics of the city, as that storyline would just make this novel too long. That will all fit much better in the sequel anyway.

Tzal finished the talk with the Blade, and took a job from him. found out a few other things as well, and was given a warning about his apprentice. Next chapter was going to go to a scene of him doing some sparring with her, but that was more setting up the political struggle, so that scene got cut. Next chapter will start the group going down to take on the necromancer, so i think its time to go back and finish ch 10.

650 words to finish ch 14.

758 words. MC found a dead rat in the tepid water of her bath (oh, the horrors!) and that led to the discovery that her people are suffering a kind of chronic radiation poisoning. Lucky for her, she knows all about that substance from her time out of her world, though no one will like what she has to say about it.

Friday I added 697 words. Saturday I netted 165. Lots of nonfiction work coming in from repeat clients (in other words, it found me and not the other way around) so it will be hard to keep at it, but I will definitely make the time. =cP

Larasse is slowly getting near where Cathrine is being kept, and soon this littel backflash will arrive at the point of time where the previous chapter ended.
