Regulars?

Not sure why this struck me today, but I find myself curious. I have an image in my head of perhaps thirty or forty people who read this thing with any sort of regularity (based on posted replies, what little I can garner from my web stats, and my guess on the amount of interest that what I have to say as a person rather than as a writer holds for most people). It could vary as much as ten percent either way without me being surprised.

But I am curious, and perhaps you’re curious, too. I’d like to ask your help in a dreadfully unscientific little survey. If you consider yourself a regular reader (however you personally define ‘regular’, from dropping by from time to time just to see what’s here, to having the weblog bookmarked and checking in daily), please reply in this entry’s comments. You don’t need to put anything more up there than a name (doesn’t have to be your real one if you’re shy), and a little notation in the comments body like “sporadic” or “daily” or “weekly” or whatever. You can say more if you’d like, of course. If you are a regular and there are things you’d really like to see more often, you can mention them, though I can’t guarantee you will see them. It won’t hurt if I know what you’re hoping to find, though.

Please just post once — it’d be a big pain to go through the IPs in the log picking out duplicates and deleting them, and I’d rather not.

And thanks for participating. If you’re a regular, thanks for coming by to see what I have to say, and adding your own two bits from time to time.

    I’m starting to come by more regularly. Don’t know at this point if I’m considered "regular" or "sporadic". Sort of in the middle of both at the moment.

    Daily, since I found your site and joined the FM in the beginning of August.

    I consider the writing-associated articles the most interesting.

    I’m an aspiring writer myself, a German (with Russian and Scottish blood) who for some reasons I can’t even explain to myself, prefers to write in English.

    I stop by maybe once a week. But I’ve never followed the Bounce link until today, so I may be back more often. As an aspiring writer, as many of you also seem to be, I really appreciate what you offer on your site and your honesty in that material.

    I check back at least once a week, if not more often.

    I’m a first time novelist and have loved the information on your site about the business, agents, publishers, and any other "how to" articles. I would love to see more about how to query a publisher directly. Also, an article on good places to find outside critiques of your work. I need an unbiased opinion on whether or not I can write.

    Thanks, and keep up the great work!!

    I check in weekly. It helps me to read your viewpoint on everything; some things I agree with and some I don’t. Without your comments, quite often I wouldn’t know there was such a diversity in what and how people regard events/things, etc. I like knowing whatever you feel moved to speak about. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Yo, people.
    I know, I’m odd. But what the heck. Okay, I guess I can say.. I come to the site about five or six times a week when I’m working on something (which, incidentally, I am at the moment), and most of those times I’ll read the weblog when there’s something I haven’t read yet on it. It’s pretty good, I don’t agree with some of your ideas, Holly, but you’re a decent person. Go you, and go Talyn!
    My little insanity-themed tale isn’t working out so well. o_o;;

    I’m a regular reader. Not sure why, except that I’m a writer myself (one who turned fifty today, so don’t complain about forty-three!) and sometimes it’s just interesting to read about the things that go on in the life of someone else who is in the same profession.

    And I find I tend to share most of your views, and enjoy your reasoning even when I don’t.

    And who knows, maybe I subconsciously hope you’ll write a line about how you write your own fiction that will make a light bulb go on for me so something I write will shoot to the top of the bestseller list.

    Silly, I know, but sometimes I wonder if that sin’t part of the reason why I find some writing sites so interesting.

    Wow, I had to scroll through a lot of names to get here! Looks like more than 30-40 to me. Can you send a few to my blog? ;^)

    I read daily when time allows, weekly for sure.

    Hi Holly!

    Happy birthday greetings from this part of the world!

    After discovering your books, I checked out your website, discovered your blog and here I am. I come here almost weekly.

    Kudos to your great stories!

    I stumbled accross your site from some long forgotten link. After reading a number of your articles on writing and the writing life, I’m hooked. Now I stop by four or five times a week to see whats new.

    Hi Holly! Happy Birthday. I come by every few days. I’ve quit the copywriting/editing world–for the time being, hopefully forever–and I’m trying to knock out a novel I’ve had in mind forever. I’m a month away from 40. It’s inspiring to me to come by your site and see how things are going with you. Frankly, I don’t know how you do it. ๐Ÿ™‚ And hell, you’re living the dream. Dream on…

    I’m a once or twice a week girl, since about Junish I think. What I like is your stuff on your own trials and tribulations with manuscripts (working now on my second, due to publisher in a few months). Plus I hold up your example of words on page like a beacon. Surely I can do a smidge of that per day! I’d love to hear more about your shift of the year publishing-wise, how you feel you’re on track better than before, and so forth.

    Daily.

    In fact, hollylisle.com is my start up page. Your weblog is invaluable. It helps us feel closer to someone we admire. And for those of us who want to write, we can read your entries and understand ourselves better by comparison. When we feel frustrated with our manuscripts, your day-in-the-life notes show us that these feelings are perfectly natural and have no bearing on whether we have talent. As you progress through your difficulties we learn how to dig ourselves out of holes.

  24. kate Avatar

    Regular; I peep in every day. I love watching the progress posts, and though we don’t share the same perspective on some things it’s often refreshing to hear your point of view.

    You have a gift with words and I like to read as many of them as I can.

    I check in daily (unless of course my computer has crashed). I enjoy everything on the site, from your comments which I read avidly to the articles (I wish there were more) and last but not least the FMW community. I haven’t been here long (a month or so) and just joined and have to say how extremely helpful the site is.
    As a side note: I too was an RN and fed up with the politics etc. and am now 40 homeschooling two children 15 & 17 with one moved out and a grandchild on the way. I appreciate what you’re going through and send you energy and peace from the wellspring.

    Blessed Be,

    I found your writing articles several years ago, and have been sporadically returning to them every time I feel in need of a little inspiration. ๐Ÿ™‚ But I didn’t know about your blog until a few weeks ago. I’ve been keeping up ever since tho.

    I really enjoy hearing about your writing experiences & your family life. (I loved the history on the carpet–it made me want to go out and buy one of those kits myself! *grin*)

    I’m not so keen on politics in general, so I tend to skip over those parts.

    I’m a FM member so that’s where I found you, and even though I don’t always agree 100% with everything you say it’s always enlightening and interesting.

    Along with Neil Gaiman, yours is the only other writer’s blog I read. I’m interested in everything you post – I’m always learning something useful! I no longer harbour fluffy pink fantasies of the writing life; I know what I’m in for – and I still want to do it, all thanks to you.
    I especially enjoy reading your writing progress, and savour the odd snippets you throw our way. This is my first comment, so…Hello! *waves*

    Regular lurker for well over a year. Bookmarked. I found your site through one of your books. I received an advance copy of "Memory of Fire" and really enjoyed it. This resulted in my purchasing and reading many of your other novels and doing my bit to encourage customers to do the same.

    I often disagree with your political views. But your comments are thoughtful and I’d rather read and consider differing points of view than just read someone who agrees with me.

    Visiting your site led me to Star Lines where I found S.L. Viehl’s Stardoc novels which I’ve also read and enjoyed.

    It’s time to get back to lurking. (The bright light is hurting my eyes.) Before I do, I wish you a Happy Birthday and hope that it’s the start of a wonderful year.

  44. Holly Lisle Avatar

    Okay. Apparently I do have a few illusions yet. I had no idea so many folks checked in here regularly.

    The responses are interesting, too. I’ve discovered that:

    * My political grumping gets the most response, but is least liked;

    * The family stuff, which gets the fewest comments and which I always feel a little awkward about adding, does have some readers;

    * And people ARE interested in the daily writing slog, apparently more than all the rest of the stuff put together.

    Since I was expecting to get about forty responses over a period of three or four days, I’m guessing that other folks may still check in. And I’m sure there are a couple of lurkers saying "Nope, I’ll just keep lurking …"

    But thanks, all of you who have posted so far, for doing so. Your comments have helped a lot. And it’s very nice to know you’re here.

  47. Nicola Avatar

    I want to be like you!

    Quite a few of us in your well-set trap! I check in a couple of times a week on average. Mostly what I appreciate is the day to day insight into the writing life. I like it when you mention a new article you’ve written, so I can go find it and read it and print it! I practically live at FM, and want to thank you for providing that location for aspiring writers.

    I may not always agree with you, but I always appreciate the way you express yourself so very well. You are a terrific writer, fiction or non, and I love the way you express your views no matter the opinion you take.
