TALYN PARTY!

Welcome to my party!

TALYN Party
TALYN Party

Help yourself to the cookies, the many varieties of cheese, fresh fruit, home-baked breads and pies, and of course, chocolate and champagne. I’m celebrating the rights reversion of my novel TALYN, and thanking both Robin Rue and Beth Miller (and my agency, WRITERS HOUSE) for making this happen.

But while we’re here (and simultaneously live on Twitter) meet my other guests, hold conversations with each other, and ask me whatever you’d like.

I’ll happily answer questions about my books, both in-print and upcoming, my move to self-publishing, do writing neep, whatever.

I won’t give spoilers, but I will give hints. ๐Ÿ˜€

There may be a lag in seeing your FIRST post appear; if you haven’t posted here before, I have to MANUALLY approve your post (which does pretty well keeping spam off my site). But once your first post is approved, the rest will show up right away.

I’ll be splitting time between answering posts here and Twitter, and will be around from 10 AM to 3 PM Eastern Time.

We may get crowded. If by chance we crash my site, I’ll still be on Twitter. Join me there.

Follow @hollylisle

Thank you for coming. I’m delighted to have this reason to celebrate, and delighted you’re here.

The OFFICIAL party is now over. But I’ll still be answering posts and questions here over the weekend If you have anything you’d like to know about books or courses or writing or whatever, I’ll be here tomorrow and Sunday after I get my words on WARPAINT.

Hello and thanks for the invitation. Your advice has been very useful. Mainly in forcing me to think things through. I put my novel to bed for a while so I could try to get some short stories published. But a lot of your advice is applicable to all writing. If I ever start making money at this, I’ll sign up for your thinking sideways course. Meanwhile, congratulations on getting your property back. Although I still don’t understand how anyone could keep it from you. I obviously need to look into this more.

  2. stephenterry.weebly.com Avatar

Enjoy your party, Holly. We are all supporting you. And you are an inspiration. Thanks for the fabulous support.

  3. Deborah Koren Avatar

Congrats on getting the rights back! That is awesome. I love Talyn! I’ll just grab some of the breakfast-type munchies, toast you with a cup of tea, and then, sadly, I’ve got to start work in a few minutes and won’t be able to hang around. But thank you for everything you do, and hurray for getting the rights back!

I am soooo excited for you, Holly. And, selfishly for me. I looked for a copy of TALYN for a long time but never found one. I’m first in line to get it when you have it out!

Dropping by to say congrats. I don’t get invited to a party very often. Thank you.

Congratulations!!! And thank you! I just finished Mugging the Muse and am getting started on your Create a Plot Clinic. I have never been much for reading non-fiction, I usually need characters to stay involved but you put so much humor and so much of yourself in your courses that I find my self rivetted! I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was 11 but I have tons of unfinished work. I’m hoping your courses will get me to a finished book. Even if I never publish anything I will be happy with that accomplishment! Thanks again for your awesome courses!!

Yes. This is the story that I have to finish prior to starting the second module of How To Write A Seriesโ€”I anticipate having it in print around the end of this month. That’s my deadline for it, anyway. ๐Ÿ˜€

This is worth a shot of single malt scotch! Congratulations! I agree, Talyn is the best book of yours I’ve read.

Can’t wait to read Redbird and the Cadence Drake books that are coming. (out come the confetti and noisemakers)

  9. Rachel Cray Avatar

I have a ton of your advice on my laptop which I’m wading through gradually. But can I catch you between drinks and ask you one question which may not be covered there:
I have a guilt problem when the words don’t come. I have three other unfinished titles waiting, all with different themes: do you think it’s healthy to flit from writing a chapter in one book on one day and then jumping to another the next day, depending on my mood?
Or should I really apply some Stalinist self-discipline to my psyche?

    Thanks
    Rachel

    1. Holly Avatar
      Holly

Self-discipline isn’t Stalinist. It’s individualist. Stalinist is when someone else sticks a gun to your head and says “Do it.” NOBODY wants that.

      1. Kevin McLaughin Avatar

If anything, I’d say self (as opposed to outside initiated) discipline is fundamental to freedom. =)

        Aww, I missed the party…

On the positive side, I was writing today!

Anyway, this comment reminded me of the great Jim Hines cartoon: http://www.jimchines.com/2011/04/comic-amusement/

No, I don’t really want someone to stick a gun to my head, but sometimes I need to feel like my muse has some serious fire-power.

I throw confetti in your honor!

  12. Bonnie Myrick Eaton Avatar

Holly, I’ve followed you for years and read your articles, profiting from your experience and willingness to share your talent. Even though I can’t stay (I have to have my taxes made out this morning), I wanted to attend the party for a bit. You’re a #10. A prolific writer. I’ve written five novels and thought I was doing great until I saw the ‘line up’ of your books. Wow! Anyway, party on.

Congratulations, Holly, I’m so happy for you! ๐Ÿ˜€

I have to take a train in half a hour or so, so I’m probably not going to hang out much, but I brought hot cocoa (it’s freezing cold in here!), epic music from Within Temptation to listen to (fitting for such an epic occasion!) and my own copy of Talyn, since I’m reading it these days and it seems appropriate! ๐Ÿ˜€

A little question for you, Holly: I remember some time ago you had a “friday snippets” tradition. These days I’ve been thinking we could bring this tradition back to life on twitter via the magic of hashtags! We could spread the word and have an easy way to group posts with writers sharing their snippets. What would you think of that? I’m asking because the original meme started from you and it’d be fun if you wanted to be part of it, or even just spread the word – provided you’re ok with the phrase becoming a hashtag, of course ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Holly Avatar

Okay, first, I’m sending you my weather, because it’s seventy outside, and more or less sunny, and you sound like you could use it.

Yes! Getting the rights to your own work back is a wonderful thing! I like the idea that with self-publishing, that isn’t an issue. Anyway, I am looking forward to all sorts of out-of-print books and new ones, both, being put out there for all of us to enjoy! (I am having my own try at self-publishing right now, partly due to things I have read on your blog. It’s exciting and scary, all at once!)

I’m super happy for you Holly – and I can’t wait to start reading some of these (and supporting you directly for it while doing so). I’ve been wanting to read Corrigan’s Blood since I started HTTS in 2009. After hearing stories of some of the publishing ick you’ve run into, I’m glad things turned in your favor on this one.

@hollylisle Someone on the party page mentioned Redbird. I’d be interested in knowing if/when you plan on writing her story! #hollyparty

I’ll finish WARPAINT, and probably book three of the Cadence Drake series. Then I want to write REDBIRD. Its been a long time coming, but not as long as Cady.

      1. Shannon Mackay (@RaenaraBradley) Avatar

Completely understandable! I love your books, and really wish Sci-Fi was something I could read. Redbird is worth waiting for, as are all of your books.

    3. Nicola Avatar
      Nicola

Will Redbird take place at the same time as Hawkspar – or will it be a sequel (obviously focusing more on Redbird). Also will Talyn appear in it.

      Plus ****SPOILERS***

I would love to know what new trouble the Tonk get into after taking down the Feegash – also find out how Talyn and Hawkspar are doing!

      1. Holly Avatar
        Holly

REDBIRD will have to be a stand-alone, because I don’t have the rights to HAWKSPAR and cannot begin to guess when, where, or for how long it will be available.

Not sure yet if Talyn will be in it or not. If she has something useful to do in it, she will. The Woman in White is still in the back of my mind, and I need to know what she’s doing with Talyn, and why. That may show up in REDBIRD.

        SPOILERS

As for the Feegash… they’re down. But they’re around.

  27. John Avatar

Congrats on getting your rights back. I know some authors are having trouble with that these days.

I would like to know which camp you are in:
