In the WRITING READS box (right column), I’ve added a handful of weblogs (generally called milblogs) written by active-duty soldiers, most of whom are currently stationed either in Iraq or Afghanistan. Each of these weblogs offers writing done under circumstances that make my local recent run of crappy weather look like nothing; each of them offers a perspective on current events that you cannot find anywhere else.
These are first-hand accounts of the war, not from military journalists, not from stand-up hairdos reporting from the roof of some relatively safe and comfy hotel, but from the people who are actually holding the line.
These are voices worth hearing — a lot more worth hearing, for my money, than the pretty faces who report what passes for news on the television station of your choice. I hope you find them as valuable as I have.
