Lying about Love

So Ki, my hero (a.k.a. Sam) has just lied to his cop partner, claiming to be in love with Aleksa, my heroine, in order to shake off some heat about his actions relating to her.

It wasn’t a planned scene. It was, however, a pretty good one, though as I was writing it, I realized how badly “talking heads” it is. 556 words, and I’m going to have to do some serious scene setting in the revision.

Still, I like what I got.

How’s your story coming along?

986 words today. For good or bad, I was really pushing myself to roll the word count over today. At least it is forcing me to get the scene on paper instead of stressing about word choice, etc. I actually left off in the middle of a sentence because I am really tired and now the word count is 41 instead of 40. Today I had to deal with several different characters/personalities in the same scene/conversation. It is hard to figure out who should say what and keep track of everybody. Anyway onward… err, tomorrow though. Good night everyone… (I hope I’m not sick again or something.)

Enjoying the lower word counts this week. It’s also giving me time to think ahead a little more, on these projects and a couple of possibilities for the future.

I couldn’t imagine working on three things simultaneously.

My head would implode into a red and grey goo that would eerily match my high school colors.

Only a short writing session tonight, but 587 words I’m reasonably happy with. I want to finish this chapter tomorrow… The pages are already written in rough form, but I need to expand on a lot, really bring out the character of the scenes. Fingers crossed I’ll get it done.

Sadly, net is zero. Actually, minus 1. But I got some major work done on my sweet spot map, so not a total loss.

537 words. This section was tying up a loose end and now I will need to transition to get them on the road for a battle. Transitions are definitely not my favorite things to write, but there is always something that makes it tougher.

606 on Tuesday for Doppelgangers. The scene between the old bad guy and the new bad guy came together, FINALLY, and ended with a nice bit of foreshadowing and a phone call from my heroine.

    Onward!

    Hi all,

519 words today. I’m three chapters into my fantasy novel. The Sentence for it reads “Body slave rendered blind by her sadistic owner aspires to become the sentient planet’s healer and discovers that she cannot reach her goals without his help.” But already I’m not sure I’m gonna stick with that sentence.
So far, Kimmu, MC, has been captured as a slave and is on sale at the slave market. Denak, a warty adolescent, will get her soon as a coming of age present. I anticipate some fireworks.
What worries me is that my first 4 chapters start 4 different storylines, seemingly disconnected but which entertwine nicely later. What editor is going to accept that for a first novel?

I think multiple POV stories are pretty popular and an editor would love to buy that. My thought is: keep going with it until WIP is done and then in revision figure out whether they’re good/interesting POVs that add to the plot line or are just distracting. Good luck.

On writing days, I try to get around 1000 words done. Yesterday I got a whopping 1720. It was a chapter about several characters and their relationships.

522 words. Deleted pricey journal software and found a free program I like a lot better.

I thought one of my characters was already dead. But maybe he’s not? I don’t know quite what to do with him.

    Hmmmmmm . . . .

2.800 Words. Don’t know how I did it. But it seems I can write those scenes best wherein people are dying.

2568 words for me and I am now over 20K on the new book. The book I finished not too long ago is starting to become a distant memory and I figure it will be ready for revision when Holly has the How to Revise Your Novel course up and running, which I plan on taking. Today it’s back to the day job after a four day weekend, so I don’t know how many words I’ll end up with tonight.

    282 words – Development.

After about 12 hours of work today, I really didn’t feel like writing. I’m just feeling totally toasty right now. My brain has been fried in honey butter and served with butternut squash and garlic. But. You know. Guilt. And stuff.

So I started working on the plot cards for the Bodyguard’s story line. And got a lot of interesting stuff that’s going to create a lot more plot cards in the Princess’ storyline as well.

Another night of round numbers: 600 words tonight. They’ve given up their attack and after Cricket kicks the former servant in the balls to make him get out of their way, they get through the door, but someone is wounded and the healer is just a little too far away.

My computer is down, crashing all day, and just plain being retarded and faulty like most machines are at some point. I need to bring it to the shop see if I can fix it. Thank God I have everything on my memory stick. But anyway, I was so frustrated today I took an old fashioned pen and notebook, went outside to sit in the tree house, and started writing, and writing, and writing…and it’s awesome, because the whole reason I was having so much trouble before was because I just wasn’t listening to my characters or my muse, and I’m glad I figured that out, even if it did take a little while.

All in all I guesstimate over a thousand handwritten words, probably close to two thousand. Anyways it was two pages front and back, part of a third, all written in cramped lettering. What I find incredibly interesting is that you can immediately tell the parts I wrote from the parts Ryan “wrote”. My handwriting is a bit larger, the letters written straight up and down. His ‘handwriting’ is tiny, cramped, and slanting forward, with the rushed quality of someone writing in a hurry. Also, he doesn’t loop the tails of his g’s and y’s. They look like sticks.

I just think it is incredibly fascinating that even though it is still written with my hand, we both have very different handwriting. πŸ™‚

500+ on Vega (tying up a loose end and advancing the story)
800+ (I think) on that short story I’m struggling with. I’m quite happy with the way it’s unfolding and I think I’ll figure the ending out too.

I can be so meticulous about that too. But it makes writing them so much easier when its done. Kudos.

    170. Muse decided she was taking another day off and work was too busy to find “silence” on my breaks. So FMC is still enjoying the view from her hotel room.

Great night for research though! I found out an increadible history behind the real hotel and the surrounding area, and there were a lot of events like rioting that fall nicely in parallel with the story. Then my husband came across something on the history channel about ancient civilizations lost under the sea, and a special on gladiators… It’s great when things fall into place like that!

1294 words for Dog Show Detective. This one deepens the mystery of the missing dog and the other found dog, when there is an obvious switching of microchips. Will need to try and do another chapter later today, trying to get 2k words per day.

    1. Charmaine Avatar

Can add 722 words now and a very short chapter. Some bonding time for Kitty and Shakespeare plus reflection on clues and questions raised. Broke my 2k goal (just).

Have you tried talking to any of the other characters? Seeing things from their perspective, in regards to what the main character is going through?

    2. Adam Avatar

i’d look back and see how you offended him. there has to be something that came out wrong, and until you figure out what that is, he won’t talk.

got back into town from my sister’s wedding, and i’ve done the same thing… pissed off my main character/narrator. i’m going back through and figuring out where i went wrong to get my groove back (shouldn’t have tried writing when on vacation, came out a tangled mess).

read the Silmarillion and followed it up with the LotR (into two towers now) and it’s been a good break, but i’ve got to figure out where i pissed him off so that i can start working again.

      good luck!

That’s what I thought over the past two weeks. I thought it was *his* fault, and he wasn’t talking to me. I thought he was reluctant to go to a place he really doesn’t want to go to. But you know what? Today I sat down and I said, “Okay Ryan, enough is enough, we have to do this.”

“Certainly,” he said. “But you must be willing to actually listen this time.”

“Okay,” I said. “Where are you then? The purpose of this scene is-”

“Look, do you want to write or not?”

      “Yes…”

“Then shut up and listen. Let *me* write.”

And that was the end of that. I got over a thousand handwritten words, and I love every single one of them. πŸ˜€ It may actually be a good thing that my computer is down, because it forced me to write by hand (I used a pen to avoid erasing), and I really cut loose this time around. πŸ™‚

Maybe change locations, talk to him outside of your usual writing space.

I heard this activity in a class once, you could try a variation of this. Get a question in mind, write it down, then after clearing the mind, write the answer with your non-dominant hand.

Also, maybe ask him if he is shutting you out OR if some other situation is keeping him from speaking. Silence can be very informative. Perhaps his silence is part of the story – is he trapped, hiding, captured, misunderstood … you know what I mean.

Let us know, if you can, what gets him talking again.

  24. JL Coburn Avatar

I’ve got 3 versions of one small scene, two better than the first, all painting the assassin in a different light, and all having their merits for later on in the larger arch of the story. Aside from that really well. I’m glad I restarted the novel the way I did.

On Saturday, I wrote 770 words in the beauty parlor whilst returning my unruly mop to its youthful glory.

On Sunday, I was so enjoying the sound of my own voice that I overwrote the ending. Stopped. Went back. Did it right. Done. Now I need transcription time (it’s handwritten in a beautiful red journal).

On Monday, I pulled out another essay for the book and rewrote it–word counts don’t make sense in that situation.

Tuesday, Peter (Shakespeare scholar husband) read, edited, I input edits and sent it off to a market with a closing deadline. Just got a thank you from the editors, which is NOT the same as an acceptance!

Other than that, not much shakin’ πŸ™‚ (Hey! That’s A LOT!)

Howze with all the rest of my compadres out there in Scribbleland?
