Messy Office Desk with Ideas and Vision

“I Have A [Writing] Dream”

Fiction is my passion. Stories that matter and that have something to say were my earliest independent love, they have been the focus of my creativity for a quarter century now, and I have made them my career.

Now, a few months from fifty, I want to tell you about the vision I have for the future of writing and great storytelling, and ask you where and how you might choose to join it.

My vision compresses down to three words:

Create, Teach, Produce.

One: Create

I want to bring meaningful stories to discriminating readers, viewers, and listeners.

This means I’ll continue to write my own fiction. Working on novels 34 and 35—with 32 published novels behind me—I’m pretty well established in that part of my vision.

Two: Teach

Beyond writing my own work, I want to help more good stories make it into the world. To me, this means offering powerful tools to writers to help them write stories that are the best work they have in them—not just filler for bookshelves, but stories that come from their heart and passion, and that, when written, move, inspire, and enrich the lives of the readers who discover them.

To this end, I’ve created all the free writing resources on the Forward Motion pages of my site, all the short writing courses in my online shop, and my first two comprehensive writers’ training courses, my how to write your novel and build your career course, How To Think Sideways, and my novel revision course, How To Revise Your Novel.

Those are a start. I have a stack of notebooks full of other ideas, and am simply working to make the time to create what’s in those notebooks. (Create A World Clinic is next.)

Three: Produce

Even beyond that, though, I want to create a publishing enterprise where editors come up with their genres and themes and are directly rewarded for their success, where writers create stories that matter to them and are directly rewarded for connecting with the readers who long for the stories they’re telling, and where people whose creative passion is storytelling can make a good living doing what they love.

Rebel Tales is the start of this part of what I want to create. Rebel Tales is still in a holding pattern while Margaret finishes and tests the backend that will allow me to pay each writer and each editor monthly their percentage of their work’s monthly gross income.

Because I think direct, perpetual monthly royalties on works created are the best way to encourage great work, and because building a way for people to be able to make their passion into their career matters deeply to me, it’s critical that I be able to pay my writers and editors in this fashion from the start.

Four: Help Out

While not immediately connected to the production of great storytelling and the creation of an expanding body of fiction worth reading, making sure that my readers, writers, and editors don’t starve is a big deal for me.

I’ve done some work to this end. I created affiliate programs to pay 50% of individual sales to anyone whose recommendation of my courses (or my writers’ courses) leads to the sale.

I created the 33 Worst Mistakes Writers Make publishing program for people who had deep knowledge in a subject to create writers’ guides on subjects writers frequently get wrong and sell them through my shop.

I want to create a site that will allow these folks and other specialists to teach regular courses and offer information in their areas of expertise to writers who need a one-stop shop for research.

Sitting in a holding pattern, I have Money To Write (how to create monthly “royalty” income that will allow you to write full-time). I have an enormous amount of material for this program, but no time to get it into the software or do the necessary promotion.

I have discovered to my chagrin that I cannot do everything.

And the reality is that I’ll be fifty in October, and no matter how much time I have left, it’s running out at a hell of a pace.

I need help.

I have never longed to change the world. In fact, I’m utterly and ferociously against anyone whose stated goal is to save the world.

My objective is and always has been to work with those people who dare to dream that they could create, who dare to act to pursue their dream, and who want to make their own lives better—for them I create the tools and the training and the community that will allow them to do this.

To fulfill my own dream, to build my chosen vision into reality,
I need people for whom bringing great, unique stories to readers tired of “canned fiction product” matters. And if you aren’t a writer, a reader, or an editor of any stripe, I still need artwork, web design, data entry, product finishing, contract and rights assistance, and other things I guarantee you I haven’t even thought of yet.

If my objective strikes a chord with you, if my vision resonates with you, and if you can see yourself as a part of this, then look at what I want to do, and tell me where you fit in—what you can do, why you want to do it, where your passion lies. What is YOUR dream, and how could working with me help you achieve it?

So many young people have answered.

Would it be possible to have a special feature in RT? The first publishable story of a young writer? 21 or younger?

    Hello Holly,

I have been reading your work for years. Your courses and essays on writing in particular have helped shape my own experiences and projects. I was in your first Think Sideways class, but I’ve been a relatively quiet member of your community.

Until now, at least. I believe in your vision. Your outreach to prospective and beginning authors has been without parallel, as far as I can find, and your methods of outreach have been equally important. We’ve all been reading for the last few years about how the internet is going to kill this and destroy that, but it’s people like you, adapting, experimenting, committed to quality but still pioneering new ways to do things that are changing the world of writing and publishing. In a very good way.

I would love to be any part of your dream that I can be.

Professionally, I have experience with translation, data entry, telecommuting, some teaching, and some customer service. I have a wide range of computer skills and speak, read, and write to some degree in four languages.

While I do not have any professional experience, I do have quite a bit of educational experience editing for friends and other students. I am also a writer. I built an education on non-fiction essay writing, and have already sold one short fiction piece.

More than all of that, though, I am passionate about the power of story and the magic of words.

While I would love to contribute most as an editor or a writer, I would jump at the chance to utilize any of my skills and passions to the advantage of your vision.

And lastly, thank you. For Think Sideways, for your shorter courses, and for your straightforward and humorous manner. I’ve never had somebody lay out a harsh reality, make me laugh, and give me hope all at the same time like you do.

    Thanks,

    Stephanie Siebert

    Hi Holly,

There just aren’t enough hours in the day and fingers on my hands to accomplish all the things I want and am driven to do – and its obvious you are in the same boat 🙂

I sometimes wish I could clone myself to do all the boring stuff like housework and bill paying and boring family dinners with the in-laws so the other me’s could spend all their time learning and writing and researching and drawing and the list goes on LOL

However, a big part of me also likes to help people out and volunteer where possible. I feel for you, trying to get everything done and stretching yourself thin, so if there is anything I can do feel free to kick it my way.

I am a graphic designer, desktop publisher and technical writer by trade. My job is to make things look nice 🙂 Or more professional, or more organised, or more expensive, or ‘bigger’ than what they really are.

I am currently doing your HTTS course and am enjoying it immensely. Writing these educational guides for other writers is what you are good at…..desktop publishing is what I am good at and I would love to give your course materials a make over. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them as they are but all diamonds need polishing 🙂

Feel free to drop me a line if I can help out in any way.

    Holly,

What a wonderful group of creative and spirit-filled people who love you and respect your ideas! If I were allowed to help, my
joy would come from being one of your readers or editors. This could very well be at the first draft level. For me, the excitement comes with the joy of discovery and the intuitive knowingness that we’ve found an author has something special in their writing. And it comes with the intuitive gift of knowing when a good manuscript can become a great book! I’ll be happy to help in whatever way possible as your vision takes shape.

Wow, so many comments. I guess I’m just one drop in an ocean.

    Dear Holly…

I really connected with your message. All my life, I’ve always wanted to do what I loved and never settle for anything less. You’re the embodiment of my dream. At least I know it can be done.

When I opened your email, I just signed on to drop my college courses (because I can no longer afford them) and send my resume to my brother to get it edited. I’m broke. I’m desperate. My education has come to a complete halt. I have no idea what to do. Then I read your email and thought I may as well leave a comment.

I’m in your HTRYN course. I won NaNoWriMo 08 and am using your course to finally edit the sucker. I love creating stories. It’s what I live for. I’ve been doing it since I could talk. If I can do that for a living, then everything will be right with the world.

I don’t have any credentials. I’m pretty much the failure in the family, but I’m really good at writing. If there’s anything you need help with, then let me know and I’ll look around and contribute as much as I can.

Thanks for everything. You’re a true inspiration.

Amber, you’re not a failure, damn it.

Get any sort of job that will enable you to eat and concentrate on creating yourself as a writer. So many writers have done that. I wish I had, but I felt “responsible” and wanted to be “good” and strayed off my path when I was younger. Since then, I’ve been leading a double life and for years I’ve been fighting my way back to my true path.

If you want to write, don’t split yourself in half. DO IT.

      1. Amber J. Gardner Avatar

Thanks for the encouraging words ^_^

I’m scared to DO IT. I’m scared if I DO IT, i’ll end up on the street homeless and starving to death. I’m scared of messing up so bad…I mess up lol. I’m your walking self-fulfilling prophecy and prophet in one.

Well, I decided today not to take that as an excuse anymore and just do it. I plan to write my heart out, but I think i really should get that job that’ll enable me to eat first…lol

Corie Conwell’s ideas are good, and would be a good add to your services. In addition, you might consider (in your growing staff) having some person to interface with various agents. In other words, “I’ll find you an agent if your story warrants an agent.”
Your lessons seem geared to prepare a writer to produce work an agent would want to prepresent, so it would all fit together. I’m still available for editing, and I’ll add, data entry.
Go girl! You have a long ways to go yet. Nearing fifty is only a good start.

    Dear Holly,

This morning I had a thought as to something more concrete I could offer.

I know you’ve got a lot of people looking for publishers/agents for their first novels. And a lot of people looking into self-publishing, or renegade marketing.

I’m proposing that I start a “Renegade Marketing Experiment” under your brand, and with your approval.

I will contact authors who are already self-promoting and/or self-publishing, interview them on what they think a new writer with no following, but a solid first manuscript, can do to build up a following and self-publish an ebook, as well as what the options are for distribution, prices, podcasting, etc.

I’ll look at the different options for paper copies, interview other authors, and test out what I find.

I’ll log all of this online, and have complete transparancy about my goals, results, any numbers and financials.

I’d suggest that the experiment be a public or semipublic blog to gain interest and feedback, and then when all the information is in, or after the first year or some other goal has been met, turn it into a course for people who are interested in going a nontraditional route.

Hopefully, this would meet your goals of education, and finding more ways to bring good, honest information to writers.

It wouldn’t cost you any money. I can build websites and blogs as needed, and probably can do any of the other technical work needed for the project. I can register domains, and do the hosting.

I’d like permission to use your name in this, as part of the Holly Empire.

It would cost you some time, to be honest – I’d like to have weekly check-in emails with you to make sure that I’m still doing things in a way you’d agree with, which I think we’d both agree would be crucial if your name is going on the end product.

At the end you’d have a product you could sell. And I’d have gained valuable experience.

Please let me know if you think this might be something you’d like to discuss further.

    Best,

    Corie

    Hi, Holly,

I adore and respect you more than almost anyone else I’ve ever met. Everything you stand for resonates within me and I can’t begin to describe how you, your writing, your blog, and your dream have changed almost every aspect of my life. And for that, I thank you.

    LANGUAGE:
And what other way to thank you than to offer any services I can to you. I’m a linguistics and African language double-major (with an Italian minor) at UNC-Chapel Hill. I can translate pretty freely among five languages (English, Italian, Latin, Wolof [from Senegal], Lingala [from the Dem. Rep. of Congo]). As unnecessary as these might be to your vision, I’m just throwing it out there. Swahili: Coming soon to a linguist near you!

I also have a really strong background in constructing languages (much augmented by your lessons), in analyzing language structure, and in pretty much anything that might fall in the realm of linguistics, so give me a shout if anyone needs help with that.

    WRITING:
I do a LOT of editing, both for grammatical errors and for content. That’d be a good place to stick me!

I also write, so I’ll be submitting lots of things.

    MISCELLANEOUS:
I work at Starbucks, and I can tell you how to make the best damn carmel macchiato you’ve ever had. You know, for those late nights.

    With best wishes,
    Brian

I am awed and thrilled by the amount of talent and the generosity of spirit shown in all these posts.

I’m now setting up the following:

    • A place for writers to submit stories.
    • A place for editors to select and discuss the stories submitted
    • A place for me to post work for artists
    • A sort of jobs board for the other things that I need help with.

I am damn near in tears. I had no idea so many other people were out there who wanted the same things, and who would be interested in working to make them real.

    Thank you.

Who I am as a writer I compare to an artist. An artist creates to interpret life. I write to mirror life; to paint a picture of people and places in with the deepest of honesty. I am yet still beginning. But this is who I am. I have read through your essay ‘Saving The World Through Typing’ It is interesting and thought provoking. It does leave me with a few questions though. Do you feel that characters should not learn anything from conflict, or that there should be no real conflict at all? Do you feel that writing shouldn’t be at all persuasive? Should stories not have a moral? I am not an English or Literature major but from what I understand about story telling is that the conflict is the soul of a story, and through the conflict a moral is learned by the characters. Now a story having a message is a funny thing. The thing about individuality is that many people can see and read different things out of the same thing and react according to their own reason, or lack of it. Would you blame J.D. Salinger for the death of John Lennon? Would you blame Jonathon Swift for parents murdering their children? Is Chuck Palahniuk responsible for the existence of corporate terrorism? People have different reasons and motivations for the things they do, sometimes they see something that they think validates what they feel, it doesn’t make it so. Even things that mean nothing can turn into something bigger than first imagined, such as Nirvana, the grunge rock band. It was against Cobain’s ethics to become as popular and/or marketed as the band was, most of his writing didn’t have much meaning, but people gave it meaning.
Writing a persuasive piece about not being persuasive is kind of a contradiction to me. You are asking people who want to change the world to change. So is it that the only good change is the change allows for the way of life that your ethics follow? I think there is a certain responsibility writers have to culture but I wouldn’t blame them or give them credit for much; some authors just write to tell of what they see and experience. Do I write to change the world? I don’t think my ideas would be accepted enough for that and I wouldn’t necessarily want for it either. I write to explain myself; to be who I am. I write because it is all that I can do. And yes, I write with purpose. Is that a bad thing? What is my dream? To survive and help others survive possibly with companionship where there can be some. I am a thinker. That is what I do. I don’t know what the structure is of what you’re envisioning, if you see room for a person like me tell me what you would like me to do.

I can’t even begin to express how being on HTTS has changed me, and I am more than ready to give back. I am in Europe so what I can do is limited, but I have some hands that type really fast, I am a writer of both fiction and non fiction, a blogger, an avid reader, a good listener and have kickass graphics skills. Would also love to get involved in Rebel Tales

If you can use any of my skills, don’t hesitate to ask.

    Hi Holly,

You sure do have a lot of work ahead! But it’s encouraging to see so many of us chiming in 🙂

I’m not sure where I’d “best” fit in, but I have a lot of interest areas… and since I’ve learned so much from you in both the two courses, the free things on your website, and many of your books/courses in the store, I’d love to give back in whatever way I can.

I write (two published short stories so far, thanks to HtTS!) both fiction and non-fiction, and I have experience writing SEO articles / landing pages for websites.

I don’t have any web design experience in particular, but my husband runs a web design company and I can always ask him for advice on web-related questions that come up!

I also love to edit & critique, and currently edit/read slush for an online flash fiction magazine — what a learning experience that’s been! I’m also a contract editor for Lifelinedesign.ca (hubby’s web design company).

Finally, I love to teach… I teach dance a few evenings a week, and I have TA experience at the post-secondary level, and I adore public speaking (and performance, if we’re getting really honest here!). I love to help people grow and discover new and amazing things about themselves and what they’re capable of… I find it very rewarding, and the learning always goes both ways.

So, I’m not sure how I best fit in since my interests are wide-spread, but I’d be willing to help where best needed.

Also, it’s so encouraging to see someone who many of us perceive as a “superwoman” step outside herself and ask for help. I greatly respect that, because it takes a strong person to ask for help… it’s something I’m still learning how to do, rather than trying to do everything myself and getting burnt out (an all too frequent occurrence in the past).

So, thank you. And all the best in getting organized to accomplish your dream!

    Hi Holly,
I want to thank you for the many words of wisdom on your website and newsletters that have given me much needed advice, direction and inspiration. I’m certain your Rebel Tales will fulfill the passions and dreams of many including myself. I have lots of stories to tell and many already written and can’t imagine my life without writing.

On the practical side I am currently involved with website design work and my other passion in life is organization… sometimes to excess. I’m early retired now after spending many years at a “day job” in an office so I can offer my experience in that regard for data entry and other practical, necessary work that needs doing. I know dreams don’t just happen they take lots of work.

I wish you much good luck with your dream and I’m available to assist in any way I can.

Wow! There’s a lot of comments here and I’m going to be overjoyed if you take the time to read mine out of what is already nearing 200.

Holly, I’m a writer. I may not have published anything, I may not have sold anything, I may not even have written very much (a novel and a few short stories are alll I would let the world see), but I’m a writer.

But this past year I’ve discovered there was more to me than that. See I got so excited about Rebel Tales I kind of jumped the gun a little and created my own e-zine. Of course it’s not as professional as yours will be, but it’s fun and I absolutely love it. Plus it’s convinced me that even if I don’t become a succesful writer, I might enjoy a career in Journalism, and I’m studying a bachelor to that end next year.

It’s called Diversion Magazine and you can check it out at http://www.diversionmagazine.blogspot.com, it’s totally free and all that (see what I mean about being less professional? you’re creating fiction crack, I’m just giving it out for free).

I know I don’t have lots of experience, but I plan on gaining it, and I can bring to the table a powerful passion for writing. When you get Rebel Tales going, I fully intend to apply for as many facets of it that make sense for me – and even a few that don’t.

In the mean time, if there’s anything you need help with that you think I might be even remotely useful for, send me an email.

    Dear Holly,

Your courses, articles, workshops and clinics always mean a great deal to me. If I had a job, I would have signed up for HTTS ages ago.

I’m a writer, but a fledgling one with no publishing credits, and probably not much business teaching–yet–but I’m also an artist, and can enter data just fine. 🙂

Building such a website with you would be incredible. When I first started writing, my only goal was to entertain. It’s a fine goal, one that is still included in my current goal, but altered. Now I want to do more than entertain. I want to leave readers with something more than a daydream or a few hours of fun on their plane ride.

You inspired me to do more. Reading your articles on how the writer builds a bridge from ignorance to knowlege, and how writing safely is never writing best, it made me brave. I’m not afraid to try creating something incredible. I’m no longer certain my work could never sit proudly on the shelf next to my favorite authors. More importantly, I learned to write things that matter to me. Not stories that are just fun with clever ideas, but stories that really say something about what I think or how I feel.

Even if you can’t fit me into the program somewhere, I want to say thank you, because I feel bigger than ever before and it’s because of you. And I wish you every luck in giving other writers what you gave me.

It’s me, Rob. You remember me from FM and I advised you on Last Girl Dancing.

I have been getting your newsletter for some time now. I enjoy hearing from you and you always have the best guidance of all those whose advice I have sought.

In this newsletter, you remind me much of those editors of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Hugo Gernsback, John W. Campbell and Lester Del Rey come to mind. They were not trying to create science fiction and fantasy, but through their efforts and belief, they became the innovators of both genres.

    I see that in you.

I am in if you need me.

My immediate dream is to publish.

Beyond that, I have similar dreams to you. To see quality fiction in some kind of venue. To see other writers like myself fulfill their dreams.

So I have taken your Think Sideways course, and once I finish my first draft I will be taking How To Revise Your Novel as well. In the end my goal is to continue writing, every novel better than the last, and one day being good enough to get published. If I can I would want to write full time so I can stay home with my son.

I don’t know how exactly I fit in with your dream, but I do know I am one of the writers you are helping and I am so grateful for that.

If my dreams do come true, if I ever get published, I would like to share how I did so with others. If I gain enough knowledge I would help others reach their goals of creating work ready for publication. But I see this as being very far along the road, and only if I reach my own dream.

Holly, I wish you the best of luck in your efforts to promote good writing. Unfortunately my current circumstances preclude my getting involved at present, but I have pondered your concerns about time and not being able to do everything yourself and have a suggestion that you might consider. Sticking to your ‘writing is a business’ theme, how about opening Holly’s online ‘writers’ interest shopping mall’? Different ‘interest shops’ (or something similar, such as doors) could be opened for business when ready and shut for maintenance, ie updates, as necessary. Readers/writers/editors/publishers could shop in/visit whichever interest areas they wanted, for example Science Fiction, Fantasy, Short Stories, Writers’ Tools, etc. Many of your resources would probably be common to several interest areas. These ‘shops’ could be run by different people, allowing you and your core team to keep an eye on the big picture, dipping in to make suggestions or help whenever you thought it was required. Just an idea. Regards, Ian

    Dear Holly,

I have been a benefactor of yours for many years, starting way back when I found Forward Motion for the first time. Since then, I’ve read many of your posts and taken both of your big courses. I’d love to help you out, if you need anything I can do. I am a writer, and plan to submit some stories for the magazine, but I would like to offer my services as a reader or interviewer. I am pretty good at picking out inconsistencies in a story, and I read a fairly wide selection of genres. I do not, however, have any formal experience. I also think I would enjoy the interview portion of your plans on the Rebel Tales website. I admit I have no experience in interviewing, but I am a novice in the writing community, but have educated myself in the field. I believe I could ask questions other amateurs could relate to and appreciate the answers to.

I wish you the best of luck in your newest venture!

Wow, would you look at all those comments! I’m not amazingly talented at much of the behind-the-scenes helpful stuff, but I definitely want to submit work for Rebel Tales and will be an enthusiastic reader/supporter.

You know, given all these people who support this, if you needed some specific skill, you could ask for volunteers on this blog and I bet you’d get loads of responses. Good luck!

    Hi Holly,

My writing ambitions began in high school and have been a dreamer of writing great books for the readers. I’m an avid reader of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and sometimes technological thrillers. I usually write science fiction regarding non-humans and humans alike. (People from outer space.) I researched the Internet, how to write science fiction, and self-help books. When I told my teachers I wanted to be an author, only two of them were happy. They told me the only way to write was to practice. Shortly after graduation, I began my first real novel I was serious about. It took many years to complete and I had it published by a publisher that looked promising. It was titled, Forceful Persuasion. Forceful Persuasion wasn’t what I expected it to be and after a year or two, I canceled the contract with a publisher with the hopes of starting from scratch. Starting from scratch meant changing the entire manuscript. I kept the main characters and the same idea. I looked at my manuscript from two point of views: An author’s point of view and a reader’s point of view. A reader’s point of view helped me when I started to have questions about the way the manuscript flowed. There were pieces missing from the original first draft which was published. I learned my lesson not to rush into something. I’ve been working on this revised version of my manuscript for about three years. I’ve spent the nights writing something that still moved me. After a while, I let the manuscript rest and took up on another piece called “Aria’s World.” This novella started around the same time and at high school. “Aria’s World” was once called “The Robot Ship”. I changed the title when I decided to pick up where I had left off. It seemed parts of the manuscripts I’ve written in the past are my legacy. I’m overjoyed when I read someone else has the dream to be published.

There are so many unpublished authors out there that need assistance finding the right publisher. There are also so many unpublished authors who aren’t able to afford the money to get published. I wish there was a publishing house that would accept authors without money fees and to give unpublished authors a chance. Although I’ve been published before, the good publishers haven’t heard of me.

I did wish at times that I would rather write than work. But what’s a budding author supposed to do to keep themselves afloat while they write their dream works? I’ve got more stories building up, but the dream to become published is harder to accomplish. I’m not about to give up my dreams. No author should give up their dreams. So, I’m going to keep dream of receiving a letter in the mail congratulating me with an advance for this novel and the next one after that, and the next one after that.

    Keep Dreaming!

Thanks for allowing me to comment.

I love your vision. I have ever since I read Minerva Wakes. It seems to me you’ll need someone with customer service skills to help service your customers. I’m your gal. Nearly 20 years and a good portion of it in human resources and the insurance industry. If there’s nothing else I understand in life it’s how to take an unhappy person and find a way to get them happy. I’ve taken that all important leap and quit my job so I can write and I know, someday, make a living from it. I’ve started my own blog as part of my growing experience and I have wonderful things planned. I’d love to be part of your vision.

Count me in! Although I can only be involved in a limited way at present due to my toddler (and no one available except for hubbie to help) as well as our current housing situation which is the same as yours *waves from the trenches between towers of packing boxes* I’d like to be involved at least in a small capacity now and increase my contributions over time.

As one of your ’33 Mistakes’ writers (for Ballet Dancers) I’d be happy to be contacted for additional information people needed in that area of expertise that’s particular to their stories/characters.

I have a knack for research and development and am often asked to help put together presentation/pitch boards for new animation features or series in development. The skills I’m wanted for are research (on a subject, art styles, myth/legend/fairy tale connections etc), the visual presentation (ie. layout of ideas and visuals in an attractive format that reflects the subject/story but is also clear and easy to refer to both on large boards and on paper, pitch packets/handouts of story/information/ideas, etc), and highlighting idea branches/story direction potentials clearly and succinctly as well as showing parallels to previous work either in books or on screen. This is often similar to organizing layouts for magazines and can cover just as much variety in terms of content, including multimedia. If there’s any way these skills would be helpful for Rebel Tales please let me know (my resume is available if you’d like to see it, of course.).

I’ve been writing and publishing (paid) for short stories and articles since the 33 Mistakes project and would love to work on a serial story for Rebel Tales in either suspense or urban fantasy genres whether completed ahead of time and planned to be released episodically or write-as-you-go according to direction. I’d be interested in collaborative projects too and am used to working with artists of all kinds so anything requiring a writer/writer or writer/artist team interests me too.

Also, anything regarding ‘parallel content’ that supplements or enhances a story (eg patient medical charts that reflect a character, portions of a handwritten letter found by someone, mock-photos, psuedo circus tickets, ‘old’ coffee can labels etc) is something I’m very good at generating too – both in ideas and actual product. My background in theater and multimedia make this an easy and fun diversion for me and if Rebel Tales (or any other project) needs this sort of ephemera or content I’d love to help.

In short, count me in wherever you think you could use me. I believe in and support your vision and would consider any additional contribution beyond 33 Mistakes (and ongoing writer support), however small, to be an honor. My only current restriction is the time my toddler needs (which can be unpredictable from week to week) and that a lot of my resources are in boxes (but that should be resolved shortly).

I should also mention I have experience in recording, editing and producing (SFX, music editing etc) voice-over work too, should you ever head into the multi-media field (re audio) with Rebel Tales or the other areas you mentioned.

It all sounds awesome. I hope I can be useful to you, if not immediately then in the future. Go Team Holly!

Well, jeez, Holly and co, after reading all these comments I feel my feeble offering of some editing help, is, well ,feeble; but it is there nonetheless. I have formal training in editing and lay out for magazines, also I edit, on occasion, for my sister’s community mag in Florida, despite living in Australia. At the mo, i am helping one of my daughter’s friends with her year 12 English extension work. I love editing almost as much as I love writing. Words have such beauty, quite like the heart and soul of Holly Lisle. ( lol, what a suck up, but how else can i add to what i have said in the past in thanks and admiration for HL?)

I only discovered you recently and have taken a few of your free offerings. My vision isn’t dissimilar to yours. I want to write, share the worlds inside me with other and help others do the same. I want to write, continuously improve and learn more about the writing process so that I can constantly move closer to my dream. I want to cross genres boundaries and create totally new ones. I want to write what other people wouldn’t dare to write.

My hubby and I are just coming out of five years of hell. (That’s why I haven’t enrolled in any of your paying courses…YET.) Some of that time included homelessness. Know what I kept with me? A notebook, pens, and seven CD’s that held everything I’ve written whether it’s published or not, a half baked idea, or an entire universe. I say that not for a sob story but to illustrate what was important to me.

What I can offer for services are steadfastness. I don’t give up. I do html coding so can do some web design. I’ve worked for small local papers writing articles and did quite a lot of reviews. I edit blogs for people and, in doing that, have learned to write in many voices. (Some bloggers don’t care about correct English, they just want to make sure their message is clear and it’s important to honor that.) I can draw and do some computer graphics. I can type at the speed of light. I can transcribe audio. I can do data entry. I have no idea what product finishing is but I’m a quick study. I used to do work for lawyers and doctors so probably can help in contract and rights assistance – even if that means I have to learn something new or research material for you. I’m great at research. I’m also very creative so I’m good at problem solving or finding new ways of doing and looking at things. I’m pretty good with a camera. And I’m not afraid to ask for help when I need it or to admit when something is beyond me.

If doing this work for you means I get the trade-off of taking your courses and participating in the community then that also means that I’m working toward my own vision and dream.

I’m midst taking down a website because it was taking me away from my writing rather than towards it.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

Well, here you go again; off on another big adventure. I applaud you constant efforts in the writing world. I have three of your courses, and find them all wonderful. In the past, I have edited over twenty five books for various self-published authors and as a result have that background. I guess I could be of help in this area if you need it. I’ve kind of retired from the editing work, so maybe it’s time to give back.
I am still writing and still learning how to write (hopefully), so when you have that part of your new adventure up and operational, perhaps I can contribute in that area also.
Let me know if you think I could be of some assistance to your efforts. In any case, best of luck to all of your adventures.

My dream/goal is to write- write stories that I would want to read. To this end, reading and editing other stories will help my own writing I’m sure.
Here’s the kicker: I live on the other side of the world in New Zealand, so whilst you sleep I am up and about (Not necessarily awake or productive, but up nonetheless) and I could be proofreading or some such while you snooze. This’ll give you more hours in the day…

    Hi Holly,

Wow. Your vision is fantastic and exciting! I would be absolutely delighted to help out in whatever capacity I can. My passion lies in the arts in all its forms, but music, reading, and writing top the list. Although the majority of my experience lies in being a SAHM for the last 16 years, I am an aspiring writer as well. I love to write because it allows me live in the realm of my imagination, which is so much more entertaining than a sink full of dirty dishes.

My writing experience consists of maintaining two personal blogs (5 years running), one of which is a ‘book review’ blog. I write poetry on occasion, but fiction is my first love. I contributed a short story plus several character profiles for a fantasy based role-playing game that has yet to be published. And I was about 40k words into writing my first novel (fantasy genre) when I happened across your pdf courses. Love ‘em! I’m still reading and learning my way through the “Create A…” clinics. Thank you! You are a terrific, brilliant, caring, and fun teacher.

I have no aspirations to save the world (frankly, the very idea makes my shoulders ache). I am at a point in my life, however, where I’m determined to get serious about my writing. My current dream is to finish the novel I’m working on and get started on and finish the next and the next… and have them all published and eagerly devoured by my adoring fans.

Not only would working with you be incredibly rewarding, but I believe it would help to keep me focused on my writing, lend me belief, and help me to become a better writer as well.

I enjoy working with images too, although I have no formal training. I enjoy creating and editing images (I use Paint Shop Pro 8). I have been working as a volunteer image editor for RPoL.net for the last two months and they’re pleased with my assistance. I’m also fairly adept with html, php, and css (self taught), if that’s of any use. Mainly though, I pride myself on my creativity, imagination, optimism, and just plain silliness. (I’ll always be a kid at heart!)

To sum it up, I would be honored and thrilled to be a part of Rebel Tales. Writing would be my first choice, but I’m happy to help in whatever fashion you need.

    Hi Holly

I found your site while editing my first ever novel for major publication, and your articles.

One of the themes of my life that’s becoming more and more obvious is “Inspire people”. I am legally blind, and through my writing, my job (making books for the blind), my website (http://steffmetal.com), my artwork and the way I live my life, it seems to have a continued, positive effect on the people around me.

I want to continue this. I wrote the “33 Worst Mistakes of Writing Blind Characters” for your course. I LOVED writing that book – not only was I helping other writers, but I had the opportunity to teach people about blindness – and how to be more tolerant – and I might have saved some poor blind kid from future school torture, so something. And that is amazing.

I’ve since written five more ebooks. I’m working on a novel-writing ebook now, and some life/inspiration ebooks. This is how I’d love to help – courses and ebooks on ALL aspects of writing … and life.

    Sincerely
    Steff

    Holly,
I found your website through “StumbleUpon” and immediately was immersed. I sent the link to several friends, and began to get your newsletters. I love your down-to-earth approach to writing: and in working through some of the workshops I felt a sense of accomplishment that I haven’t felt in writing in a long time.

That said, I’m not much of a writer. I love to do it, but it’s not my full time passion. Right now, anyway. One thing that I do love to do is book layout.
I have designed book layouts for Dr. John R. Schott, regarding Remote Sensing and Radiometry. (Go ahead, check amazon.com, I’ll wait.) As well as designing the book layout for Patricia Hogenes, a self published author, http://www.patriciahogenes.com. (I designed the cover and interior for the book, “Domestic Violence:…”, not the other one.)

I don’t know if that would be helpful, but I love to design the layouts for books and get them put together. My soul is thrilled by designing new paragraph styles, picking out fonts and placing images and headings and checking for typographical errors. I absolutely love Adobe InDesign, which handles book building very well.

I’m not an editor, although I have assisted both of the authors I worked for with editing to some degree.

If you think that you could use the services I can provide, please let me know. I will be happy to work with you. 🙂 This sort of collaborative effort is one that sounds like a great deal of fun, with a huge opportunity for growth, and participating would be a great challenge!

    Thank you for the opportunity!

I’ve taken your HTTS course and am in the process of going through your HTRYN course. I love to do anything related to writing and I’ve reffered a couple of friends to your courses, though, I don’t know if they actually followed through.

I want to help by creating stories and novels to put into Rebel Tales and have already started on about two ideas I’ve come up with for that purpose. When you get that site up and ready for submissions, I promise you, my submission package will be there. If there is anything else you need, make it known and I will so whatever I can to help you. You have my support and best wishes.

It was in my high school that I very seriously started my writing career, and as any high school student would do to learn how to do something, I went straight to the internet, and I didn’t have to go far to find you and what you have done for writers like myself.
One of my dreams have been to become a writer and to, eventually, create and build an editing company for writers who have dreams like mine. I’m 19 years old, I just got married not too long ago, and I have a little girl on the way, and I more than anything would love to weave stories for her, and for those around me, and I haven’t thought about doing it without your help.
Therefore, I am in your debt. I’m a writer, an editor, an artist, and a web designer (to a point), with many other resources at my fingertips to help. Do let me know what it is you need, and I’ll be there!
      Love ya Holly!
