Hey! I have BESTSELLERS! (Five of them…)

Please excuse my bouncing up and down, but while looking for a book on Amazon, I decided to see how my self-pubbed stuff was doing.

I’m freakin’ giddy!

PROFESSIONAL PLOT OUTLINE is sitting at #6 in Writing Skill Reference as I write this, and MUGGING THE MUSE: Writing Fiction for Love AND Money is at #17!

Take a peek ๐Ÿ˜€ : Real bestsellers, Real self-pub.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/digital-text/158279011/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_kstore_1_6_last

Both books are in the left (PAID) column on the first page.

{dancing around my office}

I’m so happy. ๐Ÿ˜€

Added later…

After my elation at finding two of my books on the first page, I went through the rest of the list. I actually have FIVE books on Amazon’s Top 100 in Writing Skill Reference.

Create A Plot Clinic is #42, How to Write Page-Turning Scenes is # 64, and HTTS Lesson #1 is #83!

And the VERY Next Day…

Plot Outline at #2
Plot Outline at #2

Picture. Proof it’s real. Pinching self, trying not to do too much damage. ๐Ÿ˜€

YOU GUYS did this. The jump was ALL you. Thank you.

    Dear Holly,
Congratulations! Am I allowed to write to you even though I don’t know you personally? I kind of thought e-publishing was not a very big deal, not a good way to go. So it’s inspiring to see you succeeding wildly at that. I am taking your HTRYN class and even though I am on week 5 (after 5 months) it is my road map and has given me direction and purpose. It’s also gotten me writing/revising once a week, which is not as much as I want to do, but is sure better than nothing, and the consistency is comforting. I am completely committed to my one time a week, at my favorite Starbucks. If anyone tries to schedule something I say, I can’t, it’s my time to write. I also love your emails and tips — I always read through them first chance I get (even if it’s just on my teeny phone). But, what is really inspiring to me is the way that you have a goal and move toward it with a progressive plan. You think the same way that I think. Thank you for inspiring me and teaching me.

Hi, Tambi, and welcome. Most of the folks here don’t know me personally (if you’re defining personally as “in the flesh”). ๐Ÿ˜€ They know me online, through courses or classes, and from chatting with me on my Boot Camps forum or here on my blog. Online is mostly where I am.

I’m delighted that you’re finding HTRYN helpful—novel revision is the single most difficult process in writing, but also gives you the most amazing results when done well.

And plans are excellent, if you work at them regularly. I walked around a corner into the results of working my plan a couple months ago, when I wrote my final Self-Pub Special, How to Think Sideways Lesson 28: How to Deliver What You Love and Your Readers Want Time After Time.

I’m going to quote myself here:

… And I know I can accomplish a lot in five years.

In the five-year period from January 2008 to January 2012, I wrote and completed:

      NONFICTION

      How to Think Sideways
      How To Revise Your Novel
      How To Write A Series
How Not To Write A Series (And Why You Donโ€™t Want To)
      How to Motivate Yourself
How to Write Dialogue With Subtext
      How to Write Page-Turning Scenes
How to Find Your Writing Discipline
      Professional Plot Outline Mini-Course
      7-Day Crash Revision Workshop

      FICTION

The Silver Door (Book 2 of MOON & SUN)
      โ€œLight Through Fogโ€
      โ€œLast Thorsday Nightโ€
      โ€œ>>>==4EVR===>โ€
      TalysMana (first draft)

      And I worked on but didnโ€™t complete…

      โ€œDreaming the Deadโ€
      โ€œCโ€
The Emerald Sun (Book 3 of MOON & SUN)
      the HTTS Walkthrough
And some projects I love but am not ready to talk about yet.

Iโ€™m going to sit here for a minute.

Iโ€™d never actually written that down before, so I didnโ€™t realize just how much Iโ€™d done in those five years. Clearly, I need to have someplace where I keep a list of projects completed and dates of completion to study on those days when it feels like Iโ€™m not making any progress.

So youโ€™re going to find one of those in your worksheets, too. โ€˜Cause… damn. You really can do a lot in five years. And you should be able to point to what youโ€™ve accomplished, and say, โ€œThere. Thatโ€™s how Iโ€™ve spent my work time. I have not wasted it.โ€

Great news and congratulations! I saw the note yesterday. Margaret was cracking the whip while we were working together on some FM updates. We had time to comment on the good news to each other, but I didn’t get a moment to stop over here and high five your success. (Okay, I could have last night, but I was wiped. LOL that reaction cheered me up amazingly! Congrats and well done, Holly, you deserve the accolades, you really are a fantastic teacher and while it’s only right that you’re returning to the world of full time fiction, it’s a sad loss for the field of writer’s education. I’ve enrolled in all of the big three courses, recommended them to every writer friend I know, and been deeply sad for those who made excuses or didn’t end up enrolling because I know how much they’re missing and how much they would benefit from your stuff. I had visions of giving the ridiculously talented people I know a helping hand up the slope of writing success, the same way you gave me one, but ‘you can lead a horse to water’, and all that. In the meantime I’m going to continue buying your fiction (I picked up the World Gates trilogy for my Kindle, will probably buy from this site before Amazon if the books are up here) and wishing you the very best of sailing on the sea of words and ideas.

I have a number of my books up in my new shop now, with one price for all three formats. PS With regards to the price. Why are you pricing them at 99 cents?

At that price you earn about 30 cents right?

At $2.99 you would earn $2

Have you tested out the price point and found that you sell 7 times as many books at 99 cents?

I get the excitement at having bestsellers. But all of us still need to pay the bills. So have you tested this out, or simply want to sell as many as possible, but still charge something?

I find myself wondering why you don’t price the first one at 99 cents. but then charge $2.99 each for the rest?

That way people can try out your work at the cheap price, and if they like it then $2.99 is not so much to pay for an author they like.

Can you give us an insight into the real-world economics of all this?

    1. Holly Avatar
      Holly

      Hi, Stuart,

Those books are introductions to my work—a chance for writers to get to know me without a lot of cost. I have other courses that are significantly more expensive, but the best way to prove to someone you can teach him how to do something he’s never done successfully before is to DO it.

With those two courses, I’m simply saying, “Yes, you really can write, and YES, I can show you how…and I’ll do it for as close to free as Amazon will let me. And if you like this…I have more.”

I’ve found it makes more sense to walk the walk than to talk the talk. ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. Holly Avatar
        Holly

BTW, Amazon WOULD let me give those courses away. Unfortunately, I’d have to pay the download fees to do it—and download fees with no corresponding income would be suicidal. Which is why they’re 99 cents.

    Stuart

    Hi Holly,

    Pleased for you.

But what does that mean in terms of the number of daily sales of each title?

    1. Holly Avatar
      Holly

It varies by slot. A lot.

As of yesterday, Professional Plot Outline was at #6 on the Writing Skills: Reference Top 100 List, and 3000-something on the Kindle Store list. To that point, I’d sold 330 copies in the previous 12 days. (You can get Amazon stats in Current Month and Past Six Weeks flavors, but you don’t get a Daily.)

That averages out to 27.5 copies per day.

TODAY, Professional Plot Outline is #3 on the Writing Skills: Reference Top 100 and #1892 on the Kindle Store list. And between yesterday and today, it sold 72 copies. So 72 copies in one day MAY be worth three spots on the Writing Skills: Reference List, and at least eleven-hundred spots on the Kindle Store list. Or it may be figured cumulatively, so that 330 copies put me in #6, and 407 copies is currently worth the #3 spot in the pinpoint list, and 1100 spots on the overall list.

AT THE BOTTOM OF MY LIST OF FIVE, How To Think Sideways Lesson 1 was #83 yesterday. It had sold 21 copies in 12 days, or 1.75 copies a day. Right this minute, it is at #76, and has sold 24 copies. That averages out to 1.85 copies per day. So either three copies between yesterday and today or an increase of .1 book per day was enough to move it up 7 slots down at the bottom of the list.

This demonstrates to me that small steady sales will get you listed on the specialty lists. But it really does take a lot of sales to get you to the top, even in a specialty list.

Realize that all sales numbers for listed books are relative to each other, so the number of copies that will get your book listed when most folks are at the beach sleeping like lizards on their towels HAS to be different than the number that will get you listed when people are in a “NaNoWriMo starts in three days! Ohgod, ohgod!” frenzy. And if someone else has a surge when your book is doing its steady thing, this will push your book down.

But this is all short-term and ballpark. Since I haven’t tracked this before, I have no long strings of numbers for comparison. And honestly, not enough time to make a regular habit of tracking this information, either.

Whoo hoo! When I read your email today I jumped up and down and scared my cats!

As the owner of my own brand new (for now e-only) press, with only three books out there so far (one of them a recent finalist in the 2012 Global Ebook Awards, much to our happiness!) and still working on my own novels, I was very happy to see you doing so well. You’re quite an inspiration to me. Publishing is nothing like my previous world of television publicity, but I’m learning the ropes as I go along, and I’m so thrilled to see you confirm again that yes, you CAN make a living writing and publishing fiction.

I also wanted to let you know that I am working my way slowly through your instructional books, after beginning to read “Hunting the Corrigan’s Blood” and realizing you are an SF writer after my own heart! I recently went through some pretty horrendous writer’s block after some life-altering experiences, and your books are giving me a welcome “refresher course” to help me back on the road to inspiration again.

    Thanks!

Second, very best of luck with getting your work recognized, and HUGE congrats on being a Global Ebook finalist!

And I’m glad I could help you get where you’re going. I’m also happy you liked HUNTING THE CORRIGAN’S BLOOD. I’m having such fun writing the second book.

Finally, thank you for the cheers. I’m delighted (and a bit amazed) how quickly folks are finding my self-pubbed work.

      1. Jaimi Sorrell Avatar

It’s the age of the independents! Back when I was at the Network, I used to have late night conversations with a friend who was an editor at one of the big legacy publishers. She and I would shake our heads over how similar our two businesses (publishing and entertainment) had become. Especially in terms of being a new writer. If you’re not a repeat best-selling author or a celebrity with a cookbook, you’re pretty much out of luck these days.

But now we have the ability to go direct to the audience. I am still dealing with the doubt on people’s faces when I tell them that yes, I always wanted to publish my own books, I’ve never wanted to have a legacy publisher — but it’s getting easier and easier. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s like infomercials, in a way. Remember how everyone used to complain about them? I never did. To me, they were just a way for deserving inventors to bypass the gatekeepers.

๐Ÿ˜€ After years of being frustrated by the way my work was presented and marketed, I now get to do it all myself. Which means if I screw up, it’s all on me.

But if I get it right…and I think I can get it right…it’s all on me.

I’ll take having full responsibility for my own success or failure over having to depend on long chains of middlemen any day of the week. EVERY day of the week.

And I always thought infomercials were cool, too. The live version of the long-form sales letter—“This is what I have, this is what it does, this is why you want it.”

Well deserved! I’ve talked to several people in my various writing groups lately who can’t get enough of your writing lesson books! ๐Ÿ™‚
I told them about Mugging The Muse and they went to get it when the conversations were done.

You deserve all this! Thank you. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you so much for recommending me. And for the kind words. I appreciate both.

It’s my pleasure. You’ve done so much to help other writers, how could I not recommend you? ๐Ÿ™‚

Many congratulations on your accomplishment!!!! I , for one, am hardly surprised though…your instructional material is gold; hidden in the rivers and mines of fiction throughout the literary badlands…and we all know what happened with gold in the badlands!!

It was mined, and made into wonderful jewelry, and coins that made folks lives better, and … fillings for teeth … and … I’m out. Too excited to think up all the cool uses for gold. ๐Ÿ˜€

      Thank you!

Your stuff truly is *THE* best I have ever used. I’ve used a bunch, too, so I feel like I have a viable review. The lessons are in small, bite-sized chunks, you use excellent examples from your own work and your writing is such a pleasure to read and so easy to follow. Absolutely the best on the market today. I give you 10 out of 5 stars. Thank you!!

Holly, I am so happy for you. After all the sweat, blood, and tears you’ve invested not only in your own writing, but in helping all of us with our writing, you so very much deserve this. May you hit the top of list and keep on selling!

I already had those two so I can’t claim to have contributed to their bestseller-dom. BUT a few weeks ago I was waaay excited to learn that you wrote THREE Devil’s Point novels – I’d only read (and loved) “Sympathy for the Devil” – so I snatched up numbers 2 and 3 for my Kindle!

So fab that you’re self-pubbing/re-releasing all your older stuff – new treasures just waiting to be discovered ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you so much for picking up the other two.

And I can’t believe the amount of stuff sitting in my drawer and on my hard drive waiting to be re-released (and written). Just need the time to get it all done. ๐Ÿ˜€
