A solid percentage of high-school students believe the government should approve news stories.
I’m no fan of the press in its current danratherspeak form. I think reporting the news means reporting all the news, not just the bits you hope are true. But … holy shit. The whole point of the First Amendment is that the government doesn’t get a veto on the press. Or on religion. Or on free assembly. Or the right to petition for redress of grievances. No matter how much you hate it (or love it) danratherspeak is legal because no part of freedom of speech and freedom of the press can be made illegal without destroying the whole of the freedom.
FIRST AMENDMENT OF THE US CONSTITUTION:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
If you have kids, teach them this. The schools are evidently missing it. If you are a kid, read the damned Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, and dig in deep enough to understand exactly what a miracle a free press is.
