Sky High. First good movie I’ve seen this year, and I’ve seen a bunch of them. It was original — and when I say that, I don’t just mean it wasn’t a remake or a sequel or a televisioningevent (shudder) like, say, Bewitched.
I mean it was actually original. It had some laugh-out-loud dialogue, some fun characters, some special effects that were not the point of the movie but that were in fact cleverly used to help tell the story (and what a concept that is). The characters were well, if not deeply, drawn; the story was charming.
No, it wasn’t an event. It won’t shatter your conception of reality, or change the way you look at the world. It was just a good story about teenagers and parents and life, told through the distorting lens of superherodom. It was worth the bucks for the tickets and the popcorn and the drinks, though, and after a string of miserable summer entries, it’s wonderful to be able to say that about a movie.
