Aleksa learns the secret

Ki finally admits the truth to Aleksa…and she didn’t react the way I expected.

Interesting. So tomorrow, I’ll pursue the conversation further, and find out why she responded as she did.

293 words.

How did your writing go?

You have a really useful blog I’ve been right here reading for about an hour. I am the novice and your post is actually valuable personally.

I have not started writing today and currently it is 4:14 PM. For some reason the words just won’t come out! Hopefully they do soon. Yesterday I did so well…I don’t want to fall behind with Nano today!

I’m not writing a novel at the moment, and neither am I participating in NaNo. I participated in NaNo a few years back with great success, and I wrote and finished a short novel (about 60,000 words) in about 45 days (from the last week in August to the middle of October).

On November 6, while trying one of several techniques outlined in Damon Knight’s book, CREATING SHORT FICTION, I came upon a wonderful idea for a short story. I’ve been working on the outline for it over the course of the last 4-5 days and finished it last night. The scenes are, I’m sure, outlined in greater detail than is needed for a short story, as it runs about three pages. This being a short story, I’m not expecting it to run much more than 7500 words (roughly 30-35 manuscript pages).

I expect to get started on this tonight, and to finish the first draft in 7-10 days.

I hope you don’t mind my sharing my progress with a short story, since your purpose is to have others write a novel with you, Holly, but after recently finishing a novel, I felt the need to take a break from the longer form and to work on something shorter.

No words. I went to the clinic yesterday… I have H1N1.
Good news is my 3 day fever of 103F (39.7C) finally broke sometime last night. So it looks like the meds are working. And now I’m off work for the week.

And thank god for mother who deliver home-made soup!

Yuck, sorry Jessica! Get well soon!

4,000 words of pure, unadulterated drivel. I’m heartened to know there’s no adultery going on in this story, but that’s about the only good thing about it.

I have been so terrible about updating! The novella is going at a snail’s pace. I’ve really been focused on trying to knock out the lectures for next semester’s class, and that’s been draining my brain. And yesterday I wound up with about 1300 words on something totally unrelated to anything I’m working on. I had a new character pop into my brain and start talking in that won’t be ignored kind of way. I think I can get back to work today.

No words counted but did some good work on re-organizing. With new job still finding time to write, but had to travel so on the plane read No Plot No Problem, which really helped. My Muse can’t wait to get home and get a pink boa and hats and gloves to write in. AND, I made a new diagram of Pedestal and had some ah, ha’s about the story. I know it is not words, but it is progress.

Tuesday gave me a bit over 1,200 words on DG, and left me with a nice bit of technical explanation to finish up, so that’s first on today’s agenda. Then I get to move on to the ramifications of a certain person having had himself put into a (medically-induced) coma.

    Fun stuff today.

On some writing days the characters don’t cooperate…

“I don’t like this scene you want to write for me. I would never do that, and I want to get out of here,” said my female lead, pulling up the straps of her flimsy Halloween costume.
“Sorry, but I don’t have anything better for you right now, and you know how upset I get when my characters want to write themselves out of my novel.” I replied, frustrated and frazzled from writing my 1667 words per day. “And don’t complain about the costume; you’re the one who told me you wanted to go out dressed as Aphrodite.”
“I know, I know. I just want to get out of this creepy bar, and go home. I’m sick with a fever remember?”
“Well, alright go call a cab then. But remember, it’s the 1980’s and there aren’t any cell phones. You’ll have to use the pay phone.”
“Fine. So where’s the pay phone?” she asked. She was already searching her purse for change.
“By the bathroom, in that dark hallway next to the exit.”
“Oh…there.” She peered into the darkness. “ I don’t know about this. It looks scary.”?
“That’s the idea.” I said, a smug smile on my face. “You see I’ve been reading some plot clinics.”
“Darn that Holly Lisle, always getting me in trouble!” she complained, stomping off into the dark as I heard her mutter under her breath, “At least this is something I would actually do.”
I was hurriedly backing up my latest thousand words, when she called back to me, “Hey, who is that guy over there and what is he doing to that woman?”
“You can SEE him?” I said, gleefully typing up the title for her chapter. “Great ! ‘Cuz you’re the only one who can do that. Now go! Do your stuff…”
“I sure will,” she said and picked up the receiver, her hand shaking, “ I’m calling the police!”

(Thank you Holly for all that you do here!)

2921 words, and no, I couldn’t do another 80 to round out the 3000.

After two days of high fever, I am slowly crawling back to work. I managed 512 words today with lots of necessary breaks. I might make more tomorrow but I won’t rush. Health is more important.

Trying to balance Naniwrimo, grad school application, managing a soccer team and caring for an injured kid… let’s say writing does not happen as often as I would want it to. I put in 200 – 500 words every day, but main effort (and time!) goes towards application process.
One of my characters out of nowhere developed a sort of mind-reading ability. I swear it was absolutely not in the plot. Alas, the plot is changing now, because so many other things now make sense that I can’t go back to the dull story I had before (especially since her mind-reading is a very scientifically sound and logical thing to happen!)

371 words on the night of the 10th. Finally got back to writing after a superbusy week (we have workers home every day since we’re changing all of the windows, roll-up blinds and so on), and a bad bad cold.

Things get definitely nasty for Erthel, my MC, and especially for her mother. Erthel wants to help her, but she’s weak and bleeding and she has no illusions about her scarce ability with “the gift”, her only possible weapon against the enemy they’re facing. Yet she just can’t wait for things to get worse or for someone to help them: she has to help her mother, and she has to do it quick before the pain makes her faint and before their enemy prevails. But how?

Tonight I’ll write about “how”. Can’t wait 🙂

    2,163 words!

Most of them, though, are the same scene from different POVs. The first version I did was a bit tame, so I went back today and wrote the presentation of Baron Zhaer to the king, from the POVs of everyone involved. Including Queen Alois, who isn’t set up for any scenes in the outline, but who showed a vicious streak I might have to follow up on.

    543 words.

The Bodyguard went to talk to a gang lord about getting new identification and passage out of the Kingdom. The gang lord offered him work and is a bit miffed he’s been turned down.

I also went back and fluffed out the previous scene to have The Princess’ reactions to seeing her father die on a TV show.

For some reason, I thought I had a better more complete outline than I did. I fleshed that out and got the first section of the book plotted and then promptly lost it when a rename function didn’t act like I thought it would. I had to re-do everything from scratch.

No writing tonight. Real life issues, but nothing major. Just more important. I have 15000 words for NaNoWriMo though and hope to dive back in tomorrow morning.
