A Meme I Liked

Tina Kulesa tagged me with Seven Sevens, and I liked the meme, so I’m participating

Here is the meme:

Seven Things to Do Before I Die:

1) Finish a delicate, complex, gorgeous sweater made of breathtaking, slender, heartbreakingly-beautiful yarn knit on painfully tiny needles knit from a pattern that I have only discovered (now that it is too late) was written by the Devil himself, and that will, before I am done, either expand my vocabulary for profanity beyond all previous human accomplishments, or render me mute;

2) Ride a horse again;

3) Walk along the banks of Beaver Creek and see how the trees have grown;

4) Go back to Gnadenhutten;

5) Visit Great Britain, Ireland, and Australia, and take the kid to Japan;

6) Have grandkids and great-grandkids;

7) Live in the mountains.

Seven Things I Cannot Do:

1) Math more complicated than algebra;

2) Any math, if the results are required to be consistently right (ie., We will not be sending anybody to the Moon based on my calculations, unless we really, really don’t like him);

3) Accurately define “offside” in hockey;

4) Get the Rangers to put a man in front of the net during a power play by sheer force of my will alone (and God knows, I have tried), because Matt hates it when I yell at them;

5) Explain why I like getting up at 6 AM to the people who love me;

6) Read books that I have been told will be good for me;

7) Fly, or even float a few inches off the ground (c’mon, don’t tell me you’ve never tried to will yourself off the bed by the power of your mind).

Seven Things that Attract Me To My Husband (or significant other):

1) His beautiful, entirely-too-rare smile;

2) His intelligence, insight, and perceptiveness;

3) His utterly wicked sense of humor, which makes me laugh so hard embarrassing things happen;

4) His exuberance, which astonishes me and inspires me;

5) His willingness to share what he knows and loves (he was my introduction to hockey, and to all the reasons to love hockey that even most hockey fans don’t know);

6) Various stuff I can’t tell you;

7) And more stuff like that.

Seven Things I Say Most Often:

1) Don’t ask for things you see on television.

2) No.

3) Don’t even try to tell me the cats did that.

4) Duuuuuude …..

5) If you want it, work for it.

6) I already told you No.

7) I love you.

Seven Books (or Series) I Love:

I chose books I’ve read at least a dozen times, and that I still love to reread. For that reason, Tolkien no longer makes the cut. Can’t read him anymore.

1) Life on the Mississippi, Mark Twain;

2) The Art of War, Sun Tzu

3) Man’s Search for Meaning, Victor Frankl
(“What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him. What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost, but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him.”)

4) Innocents Abroad, Mark Twain

5) Godbody, Ted Sturgeon

6) The Tao of Pooh, Benjamin Hoff

7) The Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury

7.5) Meditations, Marcus Aurelius

Seven Movies I Would Watch Over and Over Again:

1) The Man With One Red Shoe

2) Don’t Tell Her It’s Me

3) Lord of the Rings Trilogy

4) American Dreamer

5) When Harry Met Sally

6) Amelie

7) Monsters, Inc.

I make no apologies for my movie choices. I know they are not deep, but I love them, and they are mine.

Seven People I Want To Join In, Too:

If you are to answer the sevens, post your name and then do. And we’ll trot over and look.

I was in the middle of answering these when I got the news on Frank, and I wasn’t going to post them today. But they’re here, and done. And the thing about life, which is both heartbreaking and wonderful, it that it goes on.

    I love American Dreamer!

    Sadly though, it doesn’t quite make my top 7 movies.
    Get Shorty
    Gattaca
    About Adam (The way my wife proposed to me was in this movie.)
    Heathers
    Bound (Warshowski’s pre-Matrix)
    When Harry Met Sally
    Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

    Okay, I’ve put my list of sevens up. It’s not as easy as it looks, even as answers pop up in your head.

    The George Long version is online through MIT here, and available on Amazon here. 😉

    Meditations, Marcus Aurelius — here’s the version I have.

    I like the George Long translation much, much better. But try finding it.

    Scott, I had to print it out to read it. I don’t read long passages on line very vell either.

    Of all the things on your list the least surprising was Marcus Aurelius. I’ve read _at_ on online version that I found but I guess I’m too old to really read something on a computer screen. Gotta hard copy recommendation for me?

    Done. Strangely, I’m reminded of the slam books from middle school. 🙂 Thanks for the fun!

    “We will not be sending anybody to the Moon based on my calculations, unless we really, really don’t like him.” That made me laugh.

    I did this; my answers can be found here.

    Regarding “don’t tell me you’ve never tried to will yourself off the bed by the power of your mind”:

    ::horror-sticken look:: Without COFFEE?!!!!

    Seriously, this is interesting and wonderful and I’m glad for the added insight into your wonderful life. 🙂

    Monsters, Inc is a great movie–and not shallow at all. It’s another one I love–even though I didn’t list it on my “sevens”
