2797 words, and the end of an emotionally draining scene

Done for the night. Bittersweet end to this one — hope and sorrow together. It was tough to write, and I figure this as one of the scenes that I’ll have to tweak in the rewrite, to rip out any sappiness and keep it sharp and clean. But it’s done, and for tonight, that’s enough.
