Just finished scene 48.
Finished number 30. And heard from Robin on the proposal. Going to have to rewrite. Thought so. … Continue reading →
Twelve scenes outlined
I had the line-per-scene outline done for a previous version of this book. Then I had a much, much stronger idea, that totally negated the existing line-per-scene. Started the line-per-scene for the new version. Got as far as the old title (RIKNIR) and the first scene. Got pitched into LGD. So today, instead of doing 2500 words of manuscript, I’m … Continue reading →
Between doing the rewrite for LGD and the copyedit for TALYN, I’ve lost about a month and a half of time I’d figured for SEAFOX. I have to acknowledge, too, that I’ll have to do requested editorial revisions for LGD soon, though I don’t know when I’ll have to do them or how long those will take. I may also … Continue reading →
So yesterday I finish the last hundred pages of the copyedit, write two thousand-ish words of new ending requested by my editor (it’s much better), and come slip-sliding in here to announce my glee. And the damned site is tits-up. Ah, well. I’ll announce it today. So there. And it’s nice to have everything back and working again.
I’ve decided that on occasion I’ll open up a single thread for questions, (and comments, if you’d care to make them.) Comments are ON intentionally in this thread. When the comments link disappears, that means I’ve closed the thread for questions. Please use the REPLY button on the top right immediately under this post to ask your question or offer your … Continue reading →
Finished up on page 636 yesterday. With 828 pages in the total manuscript (in this typeface), I can finish it today if I push, and tomorrow if I stroll through in a leisurely fashion. Since either way that will let me mail it out on Monday, I’ll probably choose to stroll. It isn’t due back until Nov. 4th.. I’m pleased … Continue reading →
I like this. I would love to write this. It has some cool POV tangles, and a nice element of scary-but-not-what-you-think that becomes even scarier when you know what’s really going on. I think it will be tough to write — the balance between what the reader thinks he knows and the truth will be hard to maintain. But I … Continue reading →
Have the premise for the story down on screen now. Roughly three pages — the initial set-up and conflict. Have a kick-ass title that gives me goosebumps. Need to sketch out the action for the later story, and keep the whole thing to ten pages. This wants to run, so that may be tough. … Continue reading →
Got all the way to page 569 on the copyedit yesterday. The DONE pile is now much larger than the PENDING pile, which is a nice state of affairs. Will work on the copyedit more later today. For now, I’m starting a new proposal. Had an idea to meld the good ideas I had from the bad proposal with some … Continue reading →
Margaret did the progress bar program over at FM, and at my request, (I begged, because it was so cool), created a single-user copy for me. Graphic representation of my progress on the current novel is continually updated in the progress bar to the right. Seafox, by the way, is the new working title for Riknir, my follow-up book for … Continue reading →
TALYN copyedit coming along nicely. I’ll work on it more later, but in my first sit-down of the day, made it from 212 to 395. Not bad. Aside from the issue of "than" as conjunction versus "than" as preposition (my preference is for preposition, so I did a fair amount of STETing), this copyeditor and I mostly see eye to … Continue reading →
Finished the proposal yesterday, and realized that it was a book I would hate to write. I loved the concept, but the execution made me want to hit my head on hard things. So I sent my agent a note letting her know the proposal wouldn’t be coming after all because it reeked. Back to the drawing board. But not … Continue reading →
Remember the “Master of your domain” episode from Seinfeld? (If you don’t, that’s okay.) This little scene portion is my take on the same subject. I had a lot of fun writing it. This is an R-Rated scene. Do not click more link if underage or easily offended. [LATER NOTE: This scene was cut from the final version of the … Continue reading →
Copyeditors can make your life easy, or really hard. This is one smooth copyeditor; so far, this has been one of the least stressful copyedits I’ve ever done. Got to page 154 yesterday, and that was with every-five-minute interruptions from family and cats and everydamnthing. Starting back on the proposal first thing this morning; original writing works best for me … Continue reading →
Starting the TALYN copyedit now. Have 1200+ pages of manuscript ahead of me. Will note the point at which my eyes stop focusing today. … Continue reading →
On page six of the proposal, with hero and heroine facing a nasty, nasty dilemma: they can either work for the vile chap who holds them hostage, creating a subtle, evil weapon they know will be used against their own people, and hoping that they’ll have the opportunity to turn it against their captor before he can sell it; or … Continue reading →
Had two real days off. Off-off, not a word written, not a word edited. First day off, my mind went, “Ahhhhhhhh.” Second day off, my mind started playing with a book I read by Rupert Sheldrake titled Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home, and various nasty flamewars I’ve read in the letters sections of a handful of … Continue reading →
Redid my Geeklog installation to match the rest of the site. I like it much better without all the metal boxes. This day off is pretty much like the day off of any other writer just off a hard deadline with another two looming — I’m catching up on housework. Feh! But it’s a gorgeous day, the windows are open, … Continue reading →
That’s all, folks. Finished, signed, sealed, and I am outta here! Three-day weekend, here I come.
Flying. Everything clicking, the new add-ins and the corrections going smoothly. I love it when writing feels like this. … Continue reading →
Have worked through most of the evidence issues, making nice, nice progress overall. Oh, yes. The manuscript now has 422 pages, so I have added a whole lot of words this morning, too. … Continue reading →

Starting in this morning — will see how close I can come to done. I’m heading into a section with slightly less scrubbed-up pages, so maybe this next bit will go faster. And/or smoother. Both would be nice. And TALYN landed in my lap yesterday, all 1150 pages of it. It weighs a ton. Actually, I think it weighs about … Continue reading →
Finished on page 315, with 418 total pages in the manuscript at the moment. So basically, I’m 75% done. Not sure whether I’m done for today or not. The headache is back and my eyes are ghosting pretty badly. I might call the rest of the day vacation time, and see how close I can come to finishing tomorrow.
Have also gone from 404 to 417 total manuscript pages, so I’m adding significantly to the book as I move through it. Taking a quick break.
Finished up yesterday on page 257, and almost every page of that was new material, most of it composed on the spot to correct a massive central police procedural error that I made. By the time I was done, I had a brutal headache and was too damned tired to note progress here. On the upside, I have a couple … Continue reading →
Back for the second run of the day, starting off on page 245. Would like to get another forty typed in, but I’m not holding my breath. Will do what I can do.
Almost all of which is new material worked around the massive replot of the center section that my detective consultant’s information necessitated. It’s going really well. And I think this makes the story a lot stronger. It sure as hell makes it easier to keep the killer out of the spotlight a bit farther into the book.
