And, just like I hadn’t planned the war (and, BOY, is it one big, messy war), I got an ending I hadn’t even dreamed of. It’s the sort of ending that will drive an entire book, even a 220,000 word one. Never saw it coming, hadn’t considered the themes it offers. But in one line that just fucking fell out of my fingertips, I have discovered depth and richness in the story that I hadn’t dared to hope was there.
Now, of course, I have to translate this amazing picture in my head through my fingers and a keyboard, one word at a time, and stay true to it through what I know damned well is going to be a grueling haul.
But — damn. You want something to hold on to when you’re starting that long slog. And all of a sudden I have it.
