Wow, that was great. =) Yo've pretty much summed up the reason I write in the last few paragraphs. Ever since I was little, fabricating cheesy romantic subplots and dreaming up backstory for why almost all of the figures from Cluedo secretly had it in for each other.

When you really get to the creation point, that part when you're really making an entire world, that's probably the best part of writing for me.

So culture's not just for fantasy anymore. I learn something new everyday. I guess that's why I feel just a little dumber everyday.

Bravo. Well said.

"From romance novels to Christian fiction to chick lit to Stephen King and Dean Koontz, to coming of age and coming of middle age and other literary novels, to Harry Potter and American Psycho, you as the reader are immersed in the details of lives lived within a set of cultural expectations, or lived outside of those same expectations."

I had to read that sentence twice - once in my normal reading-in-my-head voice, then another time in my reading-out-loud-to-someone-else voice - before I got the flow of it. just FYI.

"You get novels in which people end up nearly wrecking their lives over a misunderstanding that two four-year-olds could have solved over the phone..."

I've heard this very thing said in regards to the writing style of some of the biggest mega-volume authors out there today. I won't name any names, because i think that particular - *ahem* - wheel's already been turned. ;)

Excellent intro - it's always good when an intro can get you excited about reading more. :D

Wow... that description starts out awe-inspiring, in an almost frightening, dare not mar the cathedral way... then illustrates just how awful "bad" really is... and finsihes up with encouragement, with a healthy you-CAN-do-this attitude...

Just... wow. Yeah, you nailed it, all right.

Another one outta the park! :-)

I can't wait to read this. I am struggling through some world building right now (actually a couple of worlds - eep!) but for now I'm just chanting - WWHD [What Would Holly Do]! LOL!

You have already taught me that creating and understanding cultures doesn't just apply to Fantasy and Science Fiction, it's just as essential in Contemporary and Literary works.

Can't wait for the book! I loved both the Language and Character Clinics!
